Maou-sama, Retry!: I honestly started to like this series a lot, since it manages to amuse me. Though, this episode was somewhat unsatisfying compared to the previous two. But I can’t help but mention that in this episode I saw something that I’ve never seen before in ANY isekai anime. Wanna know what I’m talking about? If so, let me elaborate a little more and I’ll explain everything!
This episode of Maou-sama, Retry! is weak compared to the series’ beginning. Yet, the story follows the previous events and begins with… a bath scene. Up to this point, I know two things for sure about Ekachi Epilka studio: first, it has humor and this anime managed to give me many sincere laughs. Second, they have a love about baths. We had three bath scenes in three episodes! However, I am not complaining, since I prefer my characters fresh and flavored. Back to the plot though!
Killer Queen (what a name!) arrives at the city, alongside with her ultra manly army, in order to chide her little sister, Luna. But suddenly they are under attack by a satanic group which set Hades, their ultimate weapon as it seems, free. Meanwhile, Demon-Lord is fighting to not let the evil forces control him and, during his attempt, he brings one of his other game characters in the virtual world. That was totally unexpected and mind blowing. I mean, he has already two avatars! The second avatar, whose name is One-Punch-man Zero, kicks the bad guy’s butts and makes all the ladies go crazy after him. By the end, we get introduced to 2 new characters, who happen to be head-hunters and their next target seems to be the main hero.
Character switching: This time I will stick with just one highlight that took me by surprise. I’ve seen plenty of isekai series, where people got trapped in (their) video game world, but it’s the first time one of them has the ability to switch characters and choose avatars! It’s an astonishing idea that gives the series plenty of new opportunities. Cheers to the creator’s imagination!
Names: The fancy white-dressed character is named Zero, which translates to the number zero in English. This name is extremely common in anime (such as in Magmel of the Blue Sea) and, sincerely, I have no idea how it ended up becoming so popular.
Names again: All tough and big guys in films and series, have something in common: their name has something to do with mountains. Either it’s just ‘mountain’, like in Game of Thrones, or even Fuji, like in Maou-sama, Retry!. There is a good reason behind it, since this word describes the hero’s size and those cult (nick)names never go out of fashion.
Hades: The satanist’s box, as he claims, contains… Hades. Hades, according to Greek mythology, is the god of the dead and the king of the underworld. He is the brother of Zeus and Poseidon and his name means ‘the unseen one’.
Even though this episode wasn’t as fun as the previous two, I gallivanted by watching it. There were plenty of comical scenes, especially the one with the random soldier saying ‘After the fight’s over, I’m gonna get Sister to abuse me’. I’m certain that the production team has an amazing time while writing the dialogues. The story seems to be interesting and the characters are adorable and simple. The only negative things, up to this point, is the sound and the animation. The music was very high and as a result it was difficult to hear the heroes’ voices. I suggest a better sound mastering from now on. Plus, the animation is poor and the action scenes are still, trembling images glued to each other. But, in order to be fair, I understand that since Ekachi Epilka is a new studio (it was founded in 2017) their budget may still be extremely low. So, I will praise them for the great comedy and I will turn a blind eye to their animation. I am sure they’re doing their best and -if the story continues like this- we’ll have one of the top comedy anime of the season!
I am looking forward to next week’s episode, since it looks like we’ll learn more about Aku’s injured leg. But, before that, I wanna know your opinion about this episode of Maou-sama, Retry!. Can’t wait to read your comments here in MANGA.TOKYO!
