Summer 2019 Anime: Official Twitter Hashtags & Pages
Summer is near, my dear friends, and our tablets and phones will need some extra space for all the amazing anime that are coming our way.
Made in Abyss did it again! It made me feel so many different emotions, mostly heartwarming and nerve-wracking at the same time! That’s why I will never stop being in awe of this spectacular show! And it just keeps getting more and more interesting: the story, the characters’ development, and the lore!
Japanese Original Episode Title: 大断層
Our amateur duo have come so far, huh? They’re already in the Netherworld’s third layer! Which means that it just got more dangerous! They need to step up their game if they want to survive, especially Riko if, for example, the situation calls for her to be alone without Reg to rely on!
The Great Fault: Finally seeing the third layer of the Abyss, I can now say that ‘mind-blowing’ is somewhat of an understatement. It looked so glorious, but also incredibly treacherous! With those monsters flying around, eating whatever prey gets in their line of sight, it’s a free-for-all hunting ground! Thankfully, Ozen told them of the safest way to descend; I thought it was just gonna be one big drop! Anyone who ever went there without knowing of the shafts would’ve been an easy snack for those creatures, or a flat mess on the ground. So really, thanks Ozen! I never imagined that even in a huge cavity as that, there’d still be an actual ecosystem where the preys would provide food and their lair would provide a shelter to the cave raiders! It’s really just amazing!
Danger!: It also slipped my mind that the predators would also need places to stay in! A few times I’ve thought that maybe one of the big ones would suddenly appear from inside the caves. However, I often dismissed it since I figured only the neritantans lived there. I stand corrected! Good thing Reg was incredibly alert, but also still inexperienced. He did make sure that the madokajack wouldn’t pose a threat to Riko anymore, but failed to take into account that there’d be other threats. Well, I guess no one knew the crimson split-jaw they met earlier would come back for them! Fortunately they managed to get away safely before he went out of commission. Whew! However…
Riko’s solo misadventures: It’s a known fact that not a lot of people can resist a grumbling stomach, so it definitely spelled trouble for Riko when she couldn’t resist hers! I thought she could probably just sleep it off till Reg woke up, but nope! She just had to try looking for food even though she didn’t know the terrain all too well, plus she was lugging around an unconscious robot! (By the way, I noticed that, at first, she was having a hard time pulling him, but eventually she was able to carry him while running around! Did she get muscles that fast? Welp.) Oh Riko! If it wasn’t for her quick thinking and multiple close calls, Reg would’ve woken up to her dead body! Or worse, he would have died with her! Even the fact that he woke up in time to save Riko; that was really fortunate!
Realizations: Someone hold me, my heart can’t stop crying!! I just love Riko and Reg so much! It’s not impossible for someone to think that Riko’s goal of meeting her mom is more important than Reg, and that, if given a choice, she’d choose her mom over him. But I’m glad that the hallucination showed how incredibly important he is too her! Even though she could’ve just enjoyed being with her friends and mother again, she realized that it wouldn’t have meant anything without Reg! She wouldn’t have been able to get that far without his help, and he really has been helping her out big time! Just by being there with her, she wasn’t lonely at all, because of his arms they were able to descend quickly, and because of his skills she was saved multiple times. And Reg knew that he needed her too because he also wasn’t lonely with her. He also needed her knowledge of the Abyss and her cooking! I just love them!
Mutual dependence: I do love pairs like this. Not just with romantic ships, but even with friendships as Riko and Reg’s. It shows that the characters don’t take each other for granted because they both need each other for serious reasons, so they’ll do whatever it takes to protect each other and make them happy! I’m quite excited to see more of this as we get to the end.
One of the scenes that left a mark on me in this episode, aside from the feels bonanza, was when they showed the view of several creatures flying with the clouds in the Great Fault. Just from that, it dawned on me just how astonishing and well thought out the world of Made in Abyss is. However, seeing a view that majestic, then focusing on the hidden caves as our characters traversed it made me think of a parallel between it, the story and its lore, as I mentioned in the intro. The world of this series is already wonderful on the surface, but getting to the nitty gritty of it with our duo’s adventure makes it all the more interesting!
Everything seems to be going well so far, except from the many near-death experiences. I can’t believe Riko and Reg are already approaching the Fourth Layer! That’s where Ozen found Lyza’s things, isn’t it? What new discoveries and dangers await the two?
While we wait for the next episode, share what you thought of this episode in the comments section, especially if you noticed other things as well! I’d love to read them! We’re also near the end of this season, sadly, so our other reviews are piling up and waiting to be read!
