Riko and Reg: While I expressed my concerns for the general attitude of the Cave Raiders towards their lives, I do admire Riko’s strength of heart. She lost her mother to the Abyss, and I think children would normally develop a trauma to what caused their parents’ death. But Riko, she didn’t seem fazed at all, but even wanted to reach the depth that her mother went to in the Void. Even if she did mope around at first and/or this is just her way to cope, it’s still an amazing feat for me. On the other hand, Reg is so mysterious! From how Riko described him, it seems he really is a robot, but he himself didn’t know about it! Even if a robot lost its memories, would it naturally assume it’s human? I’m also quite bothered that we won’t know if his memory loss was from his collapse or from the electric shock. It would be really frustrating if it was the latter! As a side note, where Riko got Reg’s name was so funny! I just hope she doesn’t treat him like her dog, though.
Themes & Trivia
Manga Adaptation: Made in Abyss is adapted from the manga series by Akihito Tsukushi, published online in Takeshobo’s Web Comic Gamma. It’s been ongoing since October 2012 and has five tankobon volumes so far!
Nature of humanity: Complaining about the mindset of the citizens on the island just made me realize that it all boiled down to one thing: human nature. Once we take something to an extreme measure, it’ll often always become a bad thing. The pursuit of knowledge and riches has been the foundation of civilization throughout the ages. But when it becomes obsessive, it can harm others, or even cost people their lives.
Unexplored places: The world is a humongous place, and despite the modern technology that enables us to get to places quickly and easily, there are still a lot of areas that haven’t been properly surveyed yet for many different reasons. Here are two lists featuring some of these untapped locations, by themysteriousworld and mentalfloss.
The environment and atmosphere, the cute art style, and, most of all for me, the captivating music gave me huge RPG vibes! This immediately drew me to the show within the first 5 minutes despite not fully knowing yet what’s going on. And, true enough, as the first episode unraveled its story, I found myself totally hooked and enthralled by its mysteries and wonders! With beautiful writing and on-point animation, I can truly say that the pilot episode successfully captured my attention. I hope it stays consistent till the end!
However, it’s apparently only going to air for 13 episodes, which made me incredibly sad because it seems to have lots of material that it can cover. Well, we can’t do anything about that except to support the show and see where it’s going to lead us! Hopefully it’ll garner better reception and result to something more? This is just me getting ahead of myself because of this beautiful gem of a show, though.
To the depths of the earth
Riko has found a new companion to the Abyss in Reg, but just how does she plan on keeping him hidden all the time, especially with her infamous reputation in the orphanage? I’m also quite excited to find out what adventures they’ll have next, and what things they’ll find! Can’t the next episode come any sooner?
