Angelica is a proud member of our otaku writer family. So proud in fact that when asked for a short bio she told us to just write, 'Any resemblance to reality is purely coincidental.'
In Episode 8 of Konosuba we had everything: Animal cruelty, medieval methods of torture, caves, explosions, zombies, and crazy cult followers doing anything in their power to get you to join their lines. It all looked pretty much like real life to me.
Japanese Original Episode Title: この痛々しい街で観光を！
During this trip we learned a lot of things. Kazuma rejecting the bounty these very grateful people were offering surprised me almost as much as those ninja ostriches did. What I didn’t really understand is if they were attracted to the adamantine in Darkness’ armor, why did they just go past her? At the end of the day the ostriches did nothing wrong and still they got killed! And eaten! They did look delicious though.
Also, if you thought Darkness hunger for punishment and pain couldn’t get any more intense, you were proved to be completely wrong during this episode. I mean, being dragged by horses? Can this girl get any more hardcore? I’m sure that is the question in everyone’s head. Kazuma did seem like he was afraid to wonder the possibility.
Their arrival to the city after the very eventful journey was definitely a welcome sight. It looked perfect and wonderful, but since we all know things that look perfect and wonderful cannot be trusted in Konosuba, it turned out it did have a bad point. Having sect members stalking me around a city where I’m supposed to be chilling and resting, would have definitely ruined my vacations and get out of me a 2.5/5 maximum rating in Trip Advisor.
The Axis recruiting people: Everything from the glint in their eyes to the obsessive way they referred to their beliefs looked like taken straight out of a horror movie. Have you ever met one of those people trying to convince you to join their very successful pyramid-like business, which, according to them, is unlike anything else out there and will definitely bring you success, money, friends, and sometimes, eternal life? That’s what the people trying to recruit Darkness and Kazuma reminded me of. If you’re too young to have been a victim of this or don’t even know what I’m talking about, just think of it as the mafia. Maybe even worse.
Children as bait: It’s definitely part of human nature to want to help a defenseless, crying child when in need, and when they prove to be grateful and nice, even better. We’re generally weak when it comes to little children, that’s why since time immemorial some cults, sects, even organized crime use seemingly innocent children as a bait for their not so innocent purposes. I bet this recruiter kid has brought in more unsuspecting victims than any of her peers. You see even Kazuma was closer than ever during the whole city wandering of signing up for it.
Even though Darkness fetish is a topic touched in every episode, the different and unexpected ways it comes out, saves it from turning into a boring and predictable thing. The fact that even being disregarded and mistreated by complete strangers turns her on leaves everyone amused.
So yes, basically this was them taking some time off, although them procrastinating is a common daily thing. As usual, I sometimes forget what their main goal in this series is and I bet they forget too. As long they make us laugh, everything will be alright.
We didn’t get to see anyone naked just yet. I’ll not lose hope since this episode ends with them still hanging around the city. However, this has all the characteristics of turning into a mess. Maybe everyone will try to hunt Darkness as being one of those filthy dogs who believe in Eris. Meanwhile, go ahead and check out the rest of our episodic anime reviews for Winter 2017!
