In Episode 5 of KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World! 2 (Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 2) the sexy officer finds, once again, Kazuma and his team when the mess Aqua made in Episode 3 by drawing a magic circle that will make all the monsters in the Dungeon come out, finally catches up to them.
Japanese Title: この仮面の騎士に隷属を!
They all head back to the dungeons where one of the funniest looking monsters ever approaches Aqua and explodes on her. Since I’m all up for things exploding just because, the fact that this was actually unexpected, increased by amusement levels even more. The same way, when those things just started to attack the rest of the party randomly, was glorious to me. Their terrified screams gave me life! But don’t take me wrong, it’s mostly because I know nobody actually dies. Really.
Then Darkness was just so happy that she was finally being useful. Can you say that you’re hitting targets if they’re specifically throwing themselves at you to proceed to spontaneously combust? Well, I’m pretty sure she doesn’t care one bit about the details. Girl just knows she’s finally hitting things with that sword.
Then we meet Vanir, and Kazuma and Darkness are given the quest of defeating him. He introduces himself as a Devil King’s commander; a demon who feeds off the dark emotions humans feel ashamed of, and therefore proceeds to try to lure Kazuma and Darkness using their not-so hidden desires to manipulate them.
We also know about his death wish fantasy, which in the realm of death wish fantasies is not really that bad. He basically desires to pull a prank on those who work really hard to defeat him. I mean, how unsatisfied must those crusaders feel?
They accidentally struck Vanir, and seemingly kill him, when the mask possesses Darkness’ body. In a normal anime series you’d think “oh, they’re probably screwed now”, but not here, nope. Vanir was not able to completely overtake Darkness and obviously they start to fight and bicker about god really knows what.
Honestly Kazuma’s unamused expression during this scene, perfectly portrayed what I was feeling. They spent so much time arguing, Kazuma was able to go into the room and erase the magic circle.
Darkness and Vanir keep on having their conversation as Vanir is taken aback by Darkness liking this situation so much, that even the prospect of ending up with her mind broken does not discourage her from enjoying the experience of her body being possessed by an evil mask.
They go out of the dungeon and keep on being ridiculous, until Vanir actually starts to look like he’s going to harm Aqua. Then we have Darkness, suddenly getting all solemn, telling everyone to just attack her in order to defeat him, and just for a moment you think about taking her seriously. Then when get what’s supposed to be a very moving conversation between Darkness and Vanir. Everyone becomes very serious, and you’re left anticipating what will happen next, and to my surprise it was not a would-be-funny moment.
And just when I was starting to believe this series was getting to predictable for my tastes. This dynamic of having something seemingly serious happening, like when Kazuma was going to attack Vanir with his dagger, but stumbles upon a rock, it’s just something that you know will happen. Maybe you will not know what exactly will occur, but you feel it in your bones, it’ll be something dumb.
Kazuma having very good luck is proven once again when after winning against the Devil King’s Commander, he and his party are rewarded with their debt being paid off plus 40 million Eris. Sadly, this won’t last, as the Aqua spending it all on booze plot will probably be reused sometime in the near future. Or maybe they’ll surprise me again!
Now, on to the next episode! Let’s watch it here together in MANGA.TOKYO!
