Entering a dungeon is a must if you are an adventurer, right? Our KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World! (Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! ) protagonists are slowly heading off towards proper quests for adventurers as they dive into a dungeon in this week’s episode.
Japanese Title: この迷宮の主に安らぎを！
This episode starts off with Megumin and Kazuma strutting happily as they go outside of town to practice Megumin’s explosion magic. Although it shows that they do this practice on a daily basis, Kazuma seems to be unsatisfied about it. Indeed, who wouldn’t? Kazuma is doing nothing but accompanying the Crimson Demon girl, after all.
In order to pay off their debts and avoid dying of hunger, Kazuma decides that the group will go into a dungeon the next day. Of course, Megumin is against it. Her explosion magic is practically useless inside a dungeon, right? Kazuma doesn’t back off though, and thus starts their dungeon diving!
With this episode, Kazuma is getting more and more serious about earning money to pay off his debts. However, will he be able to keep up his seriousness at the end? Here are the episode highlights to watch in the third episode of KonoSuba 2.
Highlight #1: Keele’s Dungeon
Kazuma shows to Megumin and Aqua the dungeon they are targeting – Keele’s Dungeon. The girls note that this dungeon is a well-known one and is already a well-explored dungeon. However, it seems that a new passage was discovered by accident.
The next day, they immediately set off for the dungeon. Megumin takes the role of watching the entrance of the dungeon while Kazuma and Aqua enter to find treasures. Kazuma takes on the role of vanguard simply because of his skills as a Thief. Aqua questions whether or not Kazuma can really see the traps. After a while, she starts boasting about her status as a goddess, which, as we all know, becomes the butt of Kazuma’s jokes. Kazuma even believes that Aqua will just end up causing troubles later on.
With the use of the map provided to them by the guild, Kazuma and Aqua find the hidden passage quite easily. While going down the passageway, Aqua puts on her annoying mode, which ultimately leads to Kazuma saying how he is currently thinking of ditching Aqua in the depths of the dungeon. Of course, airheaded Aqua laughs it off by saying that Kazuma shouldn’t joke around like that, to which Kazuma dryly replies that he is serious.
Kazuma then perceives an enemy coming toward them. He gives the ‘run away’ signal to Aqua but she doesn’t get it. Their screams resound in the dungeon as a monster quickly appears behind their back! Run away, you two!
After successfully defeating danger, Kazuma notes that while he can see the shape of the monster coming toward them, he isn’t able to perceive what it was. It was then that Aqua tells Kazuma what the monster is. Kazuma then notes how Aqua can see even in the darkness, to which Aqua replies that she can see pretty well as if it is daylight. Kazuma then asks why Aqua only says that she hears a rustling sound when they were sleeping together at night in the stables. At first, I didn’t get what they were talking about. However, when Kazuma thanks Aqua-sama with a red face, I laughed my head off. I wonder who else got what Kazuma is thanking Aqua for?
Highlight #4: Goddess Aqua
Sometimes, we see a rare glimpse of Aqua being a goddess. In this episode, Aqua blesses the soul of the adventurers who had died in the passageway before successfully conquering the dungeon. Even Kazuma notes that Aqua is being different. Also, the dungeon is filled with lots of undead monsters. With Aqua being a goddess and Arch Priest, she is more reliable than Kazuma today!
Highlight #5: Traps in the Dungeon
We also see one of the traps getting activated. As they were being burglars, err, pillaging the inside of the dungeon, Aqua finds a treasure box. She was supposed to get closer to it but Kazuma stops her. He uses his skill Enemy Detection. Indeed, the treasure box is a trap! He throws a stone at it and a Dungeon Mimic eats up the treasure box along with its surrounding. Kazuma and Aqua can only scream out ‘gross’ at the sight!
Highlight #6: The Arch Wizard’s Story
You can never find one too many idiots in this show! Not the annoying kind of idiot, though. You see, they accidentally meet Keele, an Arch Wizard, inside the dungeon. He starts telling his love story goofily. Please do take note how different he looks like before and after becoming an undead.
The only wish of the Arch Wizard was to get purified, which Aqua grants.
So the truth about why there are many undead monsters greeting the two of them while inside the dungeon comes to light! It’s Aqua’s fault! And as you can guess, Kazuma tries to ditch Aqua because of that.
Themes & Trivia
This episode is based off on the Volume 2 events of the Kono Suba light novel instead of the Volume 3 as did the previous episodes. To those who have read the light novels, it is easy to note the difference with the anime version: Darkness’ presence. In the light novel, Darkness should have been outside the dungeon together with Megumin. In this episode, Darkness is yet to rejoin the party after leaving in the first episode of Kono Suba 2.
This episode focuses more on the adventures of the original Kono Suba duo, Kazuma and Aqua. Darkness only makes a cameo appearance once in the entire episode while Megumin doesn’t have much of a screen time as she was assigned to watch the entrance. It would be great to see the four of them together again in a future episode.
My expectations were raised quite a bit upon knowing the title of this episode. After all, if you put adventurers and dungeons together, it is either a very serious battle or a escape-with-your-life journey. Of course, you can’t expect anything too serious if it’s Kono Suba. While it wasn’t within my expectations, it was still a fun episode to watch. Now, on to the next episode! Let’s watch it here together in MANGA.TOKYO!
