Hello, it’s Jennifer, a Saniwa who wishes the hot humid weather would be over already! I’m still not quite over Mikazuki Munechika’s fight from last week’s episode of Katsugeki Touken Ranbu, but we have a slow and relaxed episode this time around.
Japanese Episode Title: 歴史を守る
The First Unit have completed their assigned mission, but they still have one more thing to do before they can return to the Citadel. Meanwhile, back at the Citadel, Izuminokami Kanesada is reflecting on the mission, and decides to round up the rest of the Unit…except for Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki?
Highlights and Trivia
Touken Danshi Soup Kitchen
The First Unit run a small soup kitchen before returning to the Citadel in order to help those affected by the events of the street slasher. This is important in showing us and Honebami that, although they successfully completed their mission, it doesn’t mean that people’s lives weren’t turned upside down. Offering food is just one way for them to give something back to the lives that have been ruined by the Time Retrograde Army, even if ‘history was protected.’ However, I do wonder if deep down they think that they are doing it more for themselves than the people.
The Dategumi Together at last!
When Kane-san and Horikawa Kunihiro head to the garden to recruit Tsurumaru, we see two more Touken Danshi. Together with Tsurumaru, these 3 swords are known as the Dategumi (Date group) as they all belonged to the Date clan at some point. The kind-looking Touken Danshi who gave a tomato to Kunihiro is Shokudaikiri Mitsutada (who is sometimes referred to as CCP in the fandom. This stands for, and I kid you not, Candle Cutter Pikachu). His appearance is heavily influenced by the most famous member of the Date clan, the one-eyed dragon himself, Date Masamune. Masamune lost his right eye when he was young and is usually depicted as wearing an eyepatch. Also, due to one of his lines in the game that refers to cooking, he is often depicted as a great cook (in fact, his knife skills in Touken Ranbu Hanamaru were put to great use in the kitchen).
The darker-skinned Touken Danshi that followed was Ookurikara, who was owned by Masamune’s son. He is a sword of few words and not the friendliest, but I’m sure he’s a cutie deep down.
Finally, Tsurumaru Kuninaga was brought into the possession of the Date clan in the early-mid 18th Century, although he is now part of the Imperial Collection. I’m sure many fans were happy to see them together, if only for a minute or two.
When Kane-san was recruiting the members of the Second Unit to join him, Mutsu was skulking around after them, sighing and wondering why he was being left out. It eventually gets too much and our boy CRACKS! With no action scenes this episode, it looks like all the animation power was put into Mutsu’s tantrum. From his crazed face to his… unique positions, it was quite a sight to behold. Tsurumaru’s reaction face was also hilarious, so check that scene again if you missed it.
Of course, Kane-san wanted to invite him all along. Why can’t these two just be honest with each other? By the way, did you guys notice Tonbokiri (as in the actual blade) on display behind the Touken Danshi Tonbokiri in that scene?
Yagen Leg Watch
We got to see Yagen in his Internal Affairs outfit this episode, glasses and all! Although he wears a long white coat, his shorts are as short as ever. It could just be me, but that face-licking scene may have been added in to please..certain..fans. It could be my imagination though, so make of it what you will （╹◡╹）
However, when Yagen was washing his face near the river, I wondered if he isn’t worried about his beautiful legs getting bitten by mosquitoes!?
Until Our Next Mission
I’ll admit that that there wasn’t all that much for me to talk about in the Highlights and Trivia section this week. That doesn’t mean, however, that there was not much I liked about the episode. Although there was zero action, it was a good chance to reflect on what the actions of the Touken Danshi mean and how it affects them and those around them. It’s also nice to see Kane-san finally accepting Mutsu. But please, please, bring back the action next week!
