Just when you think that the characters in Kaguya-sama Love is War can’t get any better, Ishigami-kun comes into play. He is hilarious and a great addition to the dynamic of the Student Council. Can’t wait to see him shitting him pants every time Kaguya interacts with him.
Japanese Original Episode Title: 石上優は生き延びたい, 藤原千花はテストしたい, かぐや様は気づかれたい
Yu Ishigami, the treasurer of the Student Council wants to quit because he claims that Kaguya wants to murder him. After talking about it with Miyuki, he suggests to him that he should have more faith in his fellow members and give Kaguya another chance, but soon she comes in a bloody dress with a knife (as she was assisting in costume fitting for the drama club) and terrifies him so much that he realizes that he is too scared of her to even quit the Council at this point. Next day, Chika brings in a book from the library full of psychological tests and asks the rest of the members, abstract questions that end up having deeper meanings about their personalities and desires. On another day, Hayasaka (Kaguya’s maid) appears to be a student in the same Academy and meets up with Kaguya to head back home. Kaguya mentions to her that her appearance might be breaking the school uniform and appearance rules but Hayasaka reassures her that she is not and suggests her doing her nails as well. The following day Kaguya tries to make Miyuki notice and compliment her nails that ends up putting both of them in a cute yet bashful situation.
Ishigami is hilarious: This guy killed me with everything he said in this episode. Thinking that Kaguya is a trained killer that has killed already two or three people and that Chika has two months to live or so was absolutely hysterical to watch. Especially when Miyuki thinks that Kaguya is cute and he slowly whispers at his ear: ‘Shirogane-senpai, it’s a trap.’ I was dying. Also, when he complimented Chika about the smell of her hair and she just replied ‘That’s creepy’ and then he just says: ‘Let me die’, I felt for him so much but I couldn’t stop laughing. You had that coming, Ishigami, I mean complimenting anyone’s smell with the same words would be equally disturbing, so at least don’t feel like a perv.
The nine kittens: The whole psychological tests story was cute but I think what made it totally worth it was the scene at the end of it where we see Kaguya reading a book about how she can get injections that will give her higher rates of getting pregnant with twins (Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a hormone that supports the normal development of an egg in a woman’s ovary, and stimulates the release of the egg during ovulation). She wants to make Miyuki’s babies but can’t even tell him that she likes him. These two have definitely a weird relationship.
You have nice childbearing hips: This quote was the best thing in this episode. Honestly, I don’t know if it’s Miyuki’s sister fault that he has these kind of misleading thoughts on what’s considered sexual harassment or not, but this guy needs to calm down a little bit.
Themes & Trivia
Stockholm syndrome: Stockholm syndrome is a condition that causes hostages to develop a psychological alliance with their captors as a survival strategy during captivity. This term was first used by foreign media in 1973 as eponym when four hostages were taken during a bank robbery in Stockholm, Sweden. The hostages defended their captors after being released and would not agree to testify in court against them.
Suspension bridge effect aka misattribution of arousal: is a term in psychology which describes the process whereby people make a mistake in assuming what is causing them to feel aroused. For example, when actually experiencing physiological responses related to fear, people mislabel those responses as romantic arousal. The reason physiological symptoms may be attributed to incorrect stimuli is because many stimuli have similar physiological symptoms such as increased blood pressure or shortness of breath.
Chika was helping with costume fitting as well but decided to put the prop knife between her boobs in order for it to stay still? And then when Miyuki asks her how she does, she just shoots it out with a ‘boing’? I wonder how Kaguya let this one slide without giving her the murder eyes… Also, I loved Chika’s face when she was smelling her hair and wondering I she is stinky.
Ishigami is at worm level.
Did anyone else notice at the ending scene that there is a shot of Ishigami trying to hang himself? Even the narrator got startled and said ‘Eh?’ This show is becoming more of a horror title than a comedy with all these dark things that keep happening out of nowhere.
