At the end of Episode 6, I thought ‘aww, we were so close to seeing that dance!’ Well it was certainly worth the wait! What an opening. The purpose of this episode is to introduce us to Mista’s Stand, Sex Pistols!
Japanese title: セックス・ピストルズ登場 その①
The members of Bruno’s team are safe, and they have discovered their enemy is hiding in the Capri port. Giorno and Mista head to the island ahead of the others, hoping to take care of the enemy. It’s here we get to first see Mista’s (adorable) Stand in action. Mista just misses Sale, but is able to hit his leg, the blood of which leads him to a truck. But oh no! The truck starts and Mista jumps on… did he just attack the wrong person? I’ll have to wait until next episode.
The Dance Scene: David Production turned what was just a couple of memetastic panels into a full hallucinogenic scene- and with original music, too!! What will probably be one of most iconic scenes of the Fall 2018 anime shows us the attention to detail and pure love for JoJo that David Production are putting into this anime. I don’t doubt there will be people in the future who say they got into JoJo after coming across this scene one way or another.
Beams: During the scene when Giorno explains his plan to travel ahead to Capri, the beams of the sun highlight and rotate around Giorno. I really liked this cool little touch that screams Giorno.
Sex Pistols: We finally get to meet Mista’s Stand- Sex Pistols! They are one of my favorite Stands in all the JoJo parts thanks to the comic relief that they pretty much guarantee. Not to mention that they are all in theory voiced by Kosuke Toriumi himself! There aren’t all that many Stands that can talk as much as these little guys, so they hold a lot of presence in the little screen time they get.
According to this episode’s credits, the direction and storyboards for the dance scene were headed by Yasuhiro Kimura, who is one of the two main directors of the series..
‘Things’: When Giorno asks how many Stands he has, he uses the counter ‘hiki’. This is a counter in Japanese which is usually used for small animals. Mista answers that they don’t like being treated as pets, and replies that there are six of them with the counter ‘nin’. This is of course the counter used for people.
Sex Pistols: Mista’s Stand is called Sex Pistols, named after perhaps the most famous punk band in the world. The name fits Mista’s Stand perfectly not just because he uses a gun, but because the word ‘sex’ is also a latin prefix for ‘6’. You can see it in words such as sextuplets.
I wonder how Mista managed to swim to Capri with wine, salami and bread in perfect condition. It’s one of the many questions from this series that will never be answered, I guess. Other than the dance scene, which is truly one of the greatest thing to happen in Golden Wind so far, this episode serves more as an introduction to Mista and his Stand, which will carry on to the next episode. I would say it was an average episode (although ‘average’ in the terms of JoJo is still pretty damn good) with one particular stand-out scene. (hehe, ‘stand-out’, geddit?)
