We get to see a bit of Giorno’s famous ruthlessness in Episode 4 of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind. Using his power and intelligence, Giorno is accepted into Passione, and one step closer to becoming a Gang Star.
This episode showed us quite a lot regarding Giorno’s personality. Although it’s already implied that he is highly intelligent (especially in his knowledge on flora and fauna), it is just reinforced with each episode. Episode 4 also truly highlights two very important aspects of Giorno’s personality: his feelings of justice and fairness (he saved Koichi because he accepted that it was his own fault that he saw Polpo’s lighter) and his ruthlessness (shown in his defeat of Black Sabbath and the murder of Polpo). Both these aspects greatly reflect the two men who could be called his father: Jonathan Joestar and Dio Brando. It is how these aspects mix together that make Giorno what he is.
Original Japanese title: ギャング入門
We are still quite new to the series, so there is a lot of background music we have yet to experience. However, I can say with a lot of confidence that the OST this time round is just as high-quality as in the previous JoJo parts. I especially loved the tracks playing when Black Sabbath was walking quietly in the shadows and the track which begins 10 minutes in (around when Black Sabbath grabs Giorno’s leg). It can be pretty easy to not pay attention to the OST when there is so much going on, but I really recommend carefully listening to some of the awesome tracks that are playing in the background.
Giorno did his ‘muda’ thing, which will always be a highlight for me every episode it appears. Props to Kensho Ono for pulling it off so perfectly.
Polpo’s Stand is called Black Sabbath. Not only is it named after one of my favorite bands, but it also is one of my favorite Stand designs! It’s a very Italian design, based on a Venetian carnival outfit, and it’s easy to mistake it as death looming in the shadows. It’s an automated stand, similar to Kira Yoshikage’s Sheer Heart Attack from Diamond is Unbreakable. I’m sad we only get to see it for two episodes.
As Giorno explains his murder of Polpo, we get one black and white shot of Giorno with yellow eyes. I love this shot not just because of the visual, but because Giorno is not using his normal polite language, but a rougher style of Japanese, showing us how much contempt he had for the Capo.
Giorno Giovanna. He’s intelligent. He’s fair. He’s ruthless when he needs to be. Also, his hair looks like pasta. Although Giorno is one of the quieter and most well-mannered of the JoJos, you really don’t want to get on the wrong side of him. Giorno aims to get to the top not out of a lust for power like Dio, but because he believes it is for the greater good. This episode did a great job of highlighting what makes him such a great character. However, Episode 5 is going to introduce us to BBBB’s gang, so we have to see if Giorno’s personalities will be overshadowed by the eclectic mix of Stand users to come.
