Finally, Diavolo has revealed himself and he’s drop-dead gorgeous. Of course he is, he’s Trish’s father! This episode answers questions and raises even more. We learn Diavolo and Polnareff’s connection to the arrows, and their connection to each other. However, exactly how the arrow can help Giorno and the others is still not clear.
Japanese title: そいつの名はディアボロ
Doppio offers to help Bucciarati, with the intention of finding out what the latter is up to. However, when Bucciarati almost leads them to Mista, Doppio makes the decision to take Bucciarati out. That is, of course, before a ‘phone call’ interrupts him. As Diavolo’s soul every so slightly leaks into Doppio, it’s enough that Trish can feel the presence of her father. Bucciarati, who can only see the spirit of a person, now sees Doppio as Trish.
The pair reaches the Colosseum, and the waiting Polnareff is suspicious of the boy (‘girl’?) next to Bucciarati. It doesn’t take long before they both realize each other’s identities. Diavolo finally reveals himself in front of Polnareff. However, Silver Chariot is somehow pierced with the arrow during his attack, bringing about a strange change in the swashbuckling Stand we know and love.
– We got to see Part 3 Jotaro and Polnareff in Part 5 art style. Although I love Part 3’s ridiculously over-the-top macho style, the pair look really good in the Part 5’s slender style.
– It was a very small moment, but when Bucciarati offered to give Trish a place to stay in Naples, my heart almost broke. Bucciarati is truly a kind soul.
– The moment when Diavolo reveals himself was excellent. The low and quiet walk up the stairs gave us a hint that the boy we can see may have Doppio’s voice, but this was 100% Diavolo. The visual effects used as he activated his Stand ability was quite powerful and having his voice switch from Saito to Konishi as he walked behind the pillar was a good choice. I’ve been imagining how this scene would look in the anime ever since I read the manga, and it definitely turned out better than expected.
– I’m also loving Diavolo’s anime design. Of course, we could guess that he would have pink hair and green eyes due to Trish and Doppio’s design, but I was happy to see the bright lipstick! He looks stunning, and is visually my favorite villain of Golden Wind after Melone.
– The moment Silver Chariot got pierced with the arrow is such an important, pivotal moment in the series. However at this point it’s hard to understand what the arrow did, but even then it’s obvious that it has caused some kind of drastic change.
– The moment Polnareff thinks of his fellow Stardust Crusaders as he lays dying was quite emotional for me. In part because it shows just how important this time of his life was to Polnareff. It also lets us take one more look at Avdol, Iggy, and Kakyoin. Gone but most certainly not forgotten. They have clearly always been in Pol Pol’s thoughts.
– The title of the episode, ‘His Name is Diavolo’, is a reflection the title of Episode 26 – ‘My Name is Doppio’.
– Doppio’s ring tone has evolved!
– When Doppio is posing as Trish, he speaks in very feminine language. This isn’t just his vocal tone (honestly, Soma Saito can actually speak in a much higher-pitched tone than this), but the vocabulary and the accent used too. This may not translate well into English, which doesn’t have as huge a difference between masculine and feminine speech.
– Notice that Doppio’s soul is pink, but Diavolo’s soul is red.
So much happened in this episode. We learned what Polnareff had been doing over the years. We saw Diavolo’s true face. And, very importantly, Silver Chariot was pierced with the arrow. We have seen many humans pierced with arrows and they have either died or developed a Stand. This is the first time we have seen a Stand itself be pierced, so the outcome will certainly have a huge effect on the story. In next episode we will see what this new shadowy figure can do.
Ciao for now.
