DanMachi’s eighth episode is fascinating and I was left champing at the bit for what comes next. One big adventure is just around the corner and the main heroes need to brace themselves, because a menacing enemy is approaching… Allow me to be more specific!
Aisha and the crazy Amazon crew abduct Bell and Mikoto to fulfill Ishtar’s wish. However, Phryne captures him and locks him in her private BDSM room. I can honestly say that, when I realised what’s gonna happen, I might have been even more frightened than Bell himself. Luckily, his kind heart won Haruhime and she helped him escape once again. I’m happy that we got to see Bell’s reaction after he’s free of his chains: it was sincere and realistic, making the viewer more attached to him.
Meanwhile, Hestia Familia collaborates with Takemikazuchi Familia, struggling to find out Ishtar’s motive behind the kidnapping. Yet, after connecting the dots and ending up to a logical conclusion, no one bothered to contact Hermes, who is OBVIOUSLY the guy with the answers. This bothered me a lot… By the end, Aisha’s psychological game towards Bell was amazing and I can’t freaking tell why Bell didn’t understand a thing!
Rape Attempt: Apparently, Phryne likes torturing and raping innocent men… I can’t get over the fact that surely Ishtar knows, yet she allows this to happen. She’s the Goddess of Love after all; it’s impossible to be completely heartless. I feel really sorry for everyone who ended up in the toad’s hands and I hope for this mentally sick woman to be gone soon…
Bluffing: Aisha’s secret attempt to frustrate Bell to save Haruhime was devastating. Bell is not the brightest one and didn’t understand that something was wrong, since Haruhime told him that Aisha was always kind to her, while Aisha was saying something completely different. He might be still in shock because of the rape attempt… Yet, I hope for her trick to work…
Themes & Trivia
Phryne: Phryne was an ancient Greek prostitute. Her real name was Mnesarete, but because of her yellowish complexion she was called Phrýnē (toad). This was a nickname frequently given to other courtesans and prostitutes as well. It seems the production does some proper research when it comes to names.
Aisha: Originally, Aisha was Muhammad‘s third and youngest wife. In Islamic writings, her name is thus often prefixed by the title ‘Mother of the Believers’, referring to the description of Muhammad’s wives in the Qur’an. Aisha had an important role in early Islamic history, both during Muhammad’s life and after his death. In Sunni tradition, Aisha is portrayed as scholarly and inquisitive.
It seems like Haruhime’s arc is reaching its peak and soon we’ll see a phenomenal battle between many Familias. I hope for this fight to last longer than the War Game’s one… So far this arc is solid and straightforward, with many interesting new characters. Yet, I hope to learn more about Ishtar’s and Freya’s backstory, since otherwise the story will feel incomplete. Till then though, I’m hyped for the upcoming episode!
‘This is the last thing I’ll do for myself…’
