The title of this week’s episode is ‘I Can’t Stand Magic’, and damn, it hits these words strong. Hitomi is still feeling lost, with no explanation from her Grandma about her being sent 60 years in the past. This week’s episode focuses on Hitomi trying to adapt in her new surroundings and perspective towards magic. The focus this week on Hitomi really got to me; this poor girl so lost right now. YOU just want to give her a hug and say it will be okay.
Japanese Original Title: 私は魔法を立てない
Having no way to get home and Hitomi having to wait for her grandma to return from England, Hitomi is thrown into the deep end and begins attending the same high school as her grandmother. Hitomi’s classmates learn she is from a line of mages and begin to steer clear of her. Yuito places Hitomi on the spot to prove her magical abilities, which puts unnecessary pressure on her.
Opening Theme: The visuals for Irozuku Sekai no Ashita Kara are just beautiful, representing exactly that this anime is about a girl who see nothing but grey. Same goes for the angelic opening song, ’17 sai’ by Haruka to Miyuki, which sets up a beautiful, subtle tone that sets the mood for me when diving into this anime.
Hitomi Got Me: It wasn’t cool Hitomi was put on the spot by Yuito in order to clear up the spreading rumors of Hitomi being seen leaving his room. Hitomi blames magic and Yuito wants her to prove she can use it. This girl…. Hitomi is getting to me big time, isn’t she to you? This poor girl thrown in the deep end, sent back 60 years in the past, no way home, and feeling lost. That moment Yuito put Hitomi on the spot like that, I wanted to defend her, give her a hug and say it will be okay. Things suck for her right now but cannot wait to see her grey world change completely.
Damn Straight Apology: Hell yes, Yuito. Damn straight in apologizing to Hitomi and putting her on the spot to clear up the mess. Honestly, during this scene I chuckled a little.
Voice Acting Strong: I said about the strong voice acting in last week’s review. It was great to have more of an introduction to the other characters; they are all a likeable bunch. Expect Yuito has yet to grow on me but the performance of each character and especially Hitomi’s is strong and believable. Cannot wait for when Hitomi’s grandma, younger Kohaku comes into the picture. She looks crazy.
Approaching Your Dislikes: A valid point I noticed was made by Hitomi’s great grandmother regarding Hitomi’s dislike for magic, ‘forcing yourself to learn something you hate won’t really help you pick it up.’ Which this is so true; you’re either really wanting to give something you dislike doing a go or not. Approaching anything you dislike, depends on your wanting to try. If you don’t like it, then it’s okay. You shouldn’t never feel forced into doing anything you don’t want to do.
Haruka to Miyuki@ The voices behind the opening theme are a female Japanese duo who met in university after discovering they had similar musical interests.
My jaw may not have dropped like in last week’s episode but it still had me in awe with its emotional grip. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED the focus on Hitomi’s dislike of magic. Hitomi’s lacking a sense of color has taken a massive toll, making her feel a full exclusion of what others get to see each day. Also she’s become numb to the surrounding people, not having any expectations. Hitomi’s dislike for magic comes from the feeling of jealousy and frustration I think. The girl must have some unsettling emotions swirling inside of her and it’s understandable as to why. A lot of screen time was devoted on this important aspect about Hitomi.
I’ll tell you one thing that wasn’t cool: Yuito putting Hitomi on the spot to do magic for his own reassurance in order to stop the spreading rumors about the pair of Hitomi seen leaving his room. I don’t care what Yuito said; this must be a bother for Hitomi as well. It’s guilt trip man. You could see the uncomfortable expression on her face, I’m like THIS GIRL HAS BEEN THROWN IN THE DEEP END ENOUGH ALREADY!. Sure, later we got an apology from Yuito but in that scene, it’s annoying to watch.
Let’s turn on a positive, I liked the focus on the other characters, they’re a likeable bunch. Kurumi is probably my favorite so far. She’s got a lot of spunk, which are characters I find myself liking easily. This episode was still good and emotional gripping apart from the fact Hitomi keeps getting thrown in the deep end. The ending was so pretty, Sho walks witnessing Hitomi summoning a waterfall of gold magic. I just want to know what caused that! Her change in perspective from Yuito’s comment? Saying he’d like to Hitomi do magic again? I’m sure will find out soon enough.
This episode reminded me that being thrown in the deep end like Hitomi has been so far, is not fun. IT SUCKS. Can anyone see how lost she is currently? Hoping next few episodes things change for Hitomi vastly, her despair right now is hurting my heart!!
Tell us down below what you thought of this week’s episode? Did you feel sorry for Hitomi thrown into the deep end? Check out at MANGA.TOKYO our other fall anime 2018 shows were reviewing this season, it’s an exciting season.
I’m still feeling the magic over here, till next week!!!
