And here we are, the last episode of Haikyuu!! Karasuno Koukou vs Shiratorizawa Gakuen Koukou! I’m so glad to have spent ten full weeks of waiting in bated breath to complete this season. It was certainly worth it.
Japanese Original Episode Title: コンセプトの戦い
Karasuno is already on match point against Shiratorizawa in this fifth and final set. The Karasuno players are pretty much tired already, considering that this is the first time they have played a five-set match. On the other hand, Shiratorizawa still has the strength to send spike after spike and receive one ball to the next.
This episode brings us the news on who wins the game, how every key player reacts to the outcome, as well as what comes after the game.
Every second of this episode is probably worth adding as an episode highlight. That’s not an exaggeration! You’ll cry, shout, and jump in joy as you watch the episode. That’s what happened to me when watching this, after all. To not delay any longer, here are the episode highlights for episode 10:
Highlight #1: The Long Rally
With a score of 20-19 in favor of Karasuno, the fifth set is heating up. Hinata is the server and Karasuno is betting on the ability of the blockers to stop the opposing team from earning a point. Tsukishima is able to block it off, gaining a chance ball for the Karasuno team. Out of the chance ball, Hinata pulls off a back attack that bounces off the blocker, but Ushijima saves it. Karasuno activates its trap card against Ushijima that involves Asahi, Daichi, and Tsukishima blocking his straight spike. Though Ushijima is in bad form while doing the spike, he is still able to get the ball through. In that long rally, Karasuno does a five-player synchro attack. Just like crows soaring through the sky, the five players jump to hit the ball Kageyama sets up. That successfully earns them a score!
The beginning of the episode makes you hold your breath from excitement and anticipation. Just imagine the ball going over the net: you think that the rally is over, and that one team gains the point, but then a super receive happens! I’m rambling on because that is just how exciting that last rally was!
Highlight #2: The Upset
When the ball Hinata spiked lands on Shiratorizawa’s side of the court, I finally felt relief gushing through me. Karasuno adds another point to their score. Of course, that also means that the seesaw of match points is finally over! It is a splendid upset for Karasuno.
The ones who first shed buckets of tears are the third years – Daichi, Sugawara, and Asahi. Even the manager, Kiyoko, cries tears of joy. After all, them winning that last point of the match is equal to the realization of the third year players’ dream of being able to reach the Nationals!
Highlight #3: Supporters’ Cheers
The sound of clapping resounds in the gymnasium as the Karasuno team thanks their supporters. The vice principal is crying. Others are congratulating the boys for the amazing win.
Of course, there are also those who have other thoughts regarding Karasuno’s win. There’s the Grand King Oikawa and Iwaizumi who are analyzing the game, with Oikawa finally saying that he’d rather die than watch the awarding ceremony.
Highlight #4: The Tears of the Defeated
There is no doubt that this game is a sad one for the Shiratorizawa team. After all, no one ever doubted that they will win the game just like they always do. They, without a doubt, thought that they can go to the national tournament just like always. When reality finally sunk in and the Shiratorizawa boys understood that they have lost, they weren’t able to stop their tears from flowing.
Highlight #5: The Awarding Ceremony
How awesome it is that we are now witnessing the awarding ceremony – with Karasuno receiving the trophy, medal, and ticket to the nationals! These guys do deserve a big round of applause!
Highlight #6: The Celebratory Meal
The celebratory meal right after the game with Shiratorizawa is definitely a complete 180 degrees turn from the meal Karasuno had after their loss to Aoba Jousai during the Inter High. Back then, they had to swallow their tear-stained food due to the frustration of losing. Now, they have a more festive mood while eating despite some of them not having the strength to eat.
Highlight #7: The Prelude to Season 4… Hopefully?
Nekoma Academy, Fukurodani Academy, Nohebi Academy, Itachiyama Academy – these are the flags shown at the ending sequence of the episode. Moreover, the players of Fukurodani and Nekoma seem to be in a standoff at the entrance of the Sumida City Gym where the Tokyo preliminaries are being held. Is this a prelude to a Season 4? Keeping my fingers crossed!
And there are other big news as well! Who’s been asked to go where?!
Themes and Trivia
There hasn’t been any news yet on whether Haikyuu!! is renewed for a Season 4. However, given the release dates of the previous seasons, it is highly possible that Production I.G will air the first episode of the next season somewhere in 2017. We just have to wait and see.
