For the first half of the second episode of Grand Blue, I asked myself what I would review because we continued with the madness of the first week. There are naked guys, there is a lot of fun, less of the drinking, though no lack of mentioning nights out and major alcohol consumption. Thankfully, we did see a sudden shift in the second half of the episode. Let’s take a closer look now!
Japanese Title: 水の中 (Mizu no Naka)
Episode 2 – Underwater
It’s been three days since Iori has arrived at his uncle’s diving school, but Iori hasn’t even found out yet where his room is. He just hasn’t spent a single night there. Nanaka tells him off because of it and Iori takes the chance to make her forbid him to go out and drink again with his naked senpais. He is very content with his sudden punishment until the naked-senpai tell him that the drinking party that night would be with some girls from an all-girls university. That changes his mind, but Nanaka already set her mind to make him stay home for once. Finally, he arrived in his room and along with the naked-senpais, they start to plan out how to change Nanaka’s mind and start to unpack Iori’s things and decorate his room to look like one of an adult guy…
Continue the fun
The first half of the second episode was just like the first episode, a festival of fun and jokes, naked guys and comedy. It was good, but at some point, I broke a sweat because my notes for the episode were still empty and I didn’t have anything to properly review or say about the episode. There was a scene where they decorate the room of Iori and kept causing misunderstandings with Nanaka or Chisa. It was so much fun to watch. The pretty guy also came back to give Iori’s room a make-over otaku-style, which didn’t get much appreciation by Iori both times… It was all the more fun to watch!
Roll out the story
Thanks to the second half of the episode, we finally had the story going! So it seems the first hurdle Iori has to take in his quest to diving is… to overcome his disadvantage of not being able to swim. As they keep pointing out that you do not have to be able to swim to dive in the sea but you have to master some other important things. In this episode, it was about opening your eyes under water and keeping calm if you experience an emergency or malfunction. As far as Iori is concerned, I don’t think he should go diving, because he can’t do either. The moment he opens his eyes underwater he sees Kohei ‘hot otaku’ stripped naked, floating right in front of him… And of course, he can’t keep calm. Understandable.
His second major problem is that naked senpai might love diving and enjoy the club they have, but they don’t really take themselves too seriously and enjoy the fun they have right now. It is fine and understandable, but not really beneficial for Iori or the hot otaku. So I guess this will be a tiny bit of a problem to overcome by Iori, even though it won’t be a major issue in the series.
And the third problem to overcome or rather, not to run into, is to find interest in diving. Somehow he was thrown into cold water, just by arriving at his uncle’s shop. He was just made to join the club. Now we want to see him become passionate about it. We saw the first signs of interest for the sea in Iori when he went to the aquarium with Nanaka, where he thought about studying the magical creatures of the sea aka fish like Chisa does. It’s a start, so I hope he will become really passionate soon! Normally it only takes half an episode for the main character to start the fire for the sport they will keep doing through the series, but then again this is not our classic sports anime, as we found out last week. This is a more fun approach and more real than any of the other series. So we will see where it takes us!
Last week we had to take a sip of our drink whenever we saw a naked upper body. This time let’s take a sip for every time Iori get’s really annoyed, enraged and shocked – so whenever he makes a stupid face. If you have watched the first episode, you know which faces I mean. The ones that are drawn really different from the usual style. Cheers!
See you next week
This is fun! I like the mix of sitting with my mouth open in disbelieve and laughing with (and at) the main characters and then getting to a more serious dialogue part. This definitely is something I normally don’t choose to watch, so I am glad I decided to give Grand Blue a chance! I hope I can greet you again in next week’s episode!
