In this episode of Gakuen Babysitters (School Babysitters), Usaida takes an award as the worst babysitter ever hired. I am wondering how the chairwoman lets him work there, he is truly awful at his job.
Japanese Original Episode Title: その5
Ryu is taking care of the kids from early in the morning, as usual, but an upper classmate of his comes into the club looking for Midori-chan. Apparently, he has a crush on her mom, Sawatari-sensei, and he came to see his ‘future child’. Long story short, he thought she was a widow and wanted to help her raise her child because… well because he has a crush on her. The next day, Kirin and Taka get into a fight because they both want to prove that witches and superheroes are real. Kirin tries to make herself fly with a broomstick and Ryu is deeply troubled wondering if he has to tell her the truth or not. By the end of the episode, thanks to our tsundere chairwoman, he realizes that some things are meant to be said in a certain way to children so they understand but won’t try to harm themselves.
Why would you be doing this first thing in the morning? Yes Inui-sempai, as if Ryu has a choice of when Midori-chan decides to poop in her pants. You are so ready to become a father. Thankfully, Sawatari-sensei’s real husband (aka man living with a bushy beard in his face) is alive and dandy, so you are spared with more years to practice.
Inomata: I know that a lot of people find her cute, but I find her quite annoying. Instead of trying to talk to Ryu, she makes stupid remarks to him like ‘Keep your eyes looking straight when walking on the corridor’ or ‘Don’t stand in the way and block the toilets’. What the hell is wrong with you, woman? Even after spending time with the kids, after realizing that she is weird and awkward (she even admits that she has a problem), when Ryu asks her for help, she brings the ‘witch trials’ books from the library, thinking that this would be good evidence to show to a toddler. That girl is helpless.
Kirin-chan is adorable: She is so cute. When she was looking all-like Inomata, I was like nooooo, she ruined the best of all the babies! But thankfully she ‘still has a dream’ like Ryu said. I loved how she brought with her a witch fairy tale to showcase proof that witches exist and I also loved how determined she was to fly on that broom.
Usaida is the worst: He is seriously the worst babysitter ever. His existence is irrelevant. He just sleeps all day and when he is awake he does absolutely nothing else than holding Midori-chan and pretending to be there. What kind of an adult leaves a baby by herself to go read a story to the rest of the kids and pay no further attention to her? Inui-sempai was right to characterize him as a ‘monster’.
Character’s names: To carry on analyzing the names of the characters as we started doing in episode 2, Hiroyuki Inui has the character 犬 (inu) in his name which means ‘dog’. Also, if you notice, Ryuchi, Us, ida and Hayato have a small animal design in the aprons that they wear when they work in the babysitter’s club, showcasing the animal of their name.
Oni: As mentioned above, Inui calls Usaida an ‘oni’. Basically Oni (鬼) are a kind of yōkai, or supernatural demon, devils, ogre, or trolls in Japanese folklore. The word ‘oni’ is sometimes speculated to be derived from on, the on’yomi reading of a character (隠) meaning ‘to hide or conceal’, because oni were originally invisible spirits or gods which caused disasters, disease, and other unpleasant things. They would also change their forms in order to devour humans. They are also popular characters in Japanese art, literature, and theatre. I wouldn’t be surprised if Usaida is an actual monster with all the things he’s been doing.
I would really like to see more about each of the kids’ families. The archeologist husband of Sawatari-sensei that was in an excavation in Turkey and has a bushy beard is kind of intriguing to me and seeing again Takuma’s and Kazuma’s father wouldn’t be bad at all. I would also like to see Kirin’s and Taka’s families. It would be interesting to see what kind of influences they have from their parents.
Poor tsundere chairwoman. In the previous episode, she was the Demon Lady and now she is considered a witch. I strongly believe that she is as pure as a sheep (hence her name), and I think she just pretends to be all tsundere to earn the respect of everyone and most importantly to hide the fact that she is probably sad and lonely. What do you think about our tsundere old lady? Let me know in comments! Cheers!
