Time went by so fast! We’re already reached episode 20 of Fruits Basket, a tiny little two sparkling at the front of the episode number! It makes me sad and happy at the same time, because I think there will be a break before the second season, which means waiting until we see Tohru, Yuki and Kyo again hopefully soon in a second season and the continuation of the story! In the meantime, I might take the chance and re-read the manga. But let’s see how things went this episode!
Japanese Title: 何マジで拾ってんのさ (Nani majide hirotte’n nosa)
The young boy Hiro appears before Tohru and explains that he came all the way to meet her, since everybody else from the zodaics seems to like her so much. He tricks her into picking his dirty shoe up for him and steals her things, which leaves Tohru in tears, since her mother’s picture was in there. Thankfully Momiji and Kisa come to her rescue and make Hiro return her things. Tohru pretends to be unforgiving so that she can hug him as a punishment and finds out that he is the tiger zodiac. When Hiro and Kisa are back home the rest of the family starts to explain why Hiro often behaves like a little brat and what Akito had to do with it…
I love his character for being someone you hate at first but then get behind him and start to realize why he behaves a certain way. Empathy, baby! I wish people would also apply it more in everyday life, though. To be fair, I really, really really hate him when he takes Tohru’s mom. Someone needs to kick that kid’s butt! But thankfully he has Tohru now, so things will get a bit better…
I think pretty much everybody was surprised when Tohru said she wouldn’t forgive Hiro and said „An apology is not enough. I give you the hug punishment!“ Which is followed by…
…Kyo going „How is that a punishment?“ He already knows way too well that he would love if she hugged him.
Ah, there was more information about how cruel Akito is. I think these last few episodes have started to foreshadow the darkness of the following episodes, even though Akito doesn’t have much to do with it yet.
My heart! I just love Momiji so much. He saved Tohru. Okay, together with Kisa, but he was so cute doing it. Why is he so cute?
It’s only one of many thoughts I have about Fruits Basket but I think that what makes the story so great is the big contrast between happiness and cruelty. On one hand there is Tohru’s harsh reality of being left alone after her mother’s death but there is still her sunny character and her world view. On one hand there is the cruel Akito and what she does to everybody around her, but then they are all still loving and striving for a calm, happy life. Sadness and happiness go hand in hand and it’s okay like that. It’s life. The gap just makes it more interesting to watch.
Hiro is such a young boy, but then he also has such complex feelings one wouldn’t dare to give a child. He feels so much love for Kisa already, he is jealous of Tohru and I think he needs to be scared of Akito while he tries to be brave and fight for his loved one. Being one of the zodiacs really isn’t easy…
Yeah, you know who it’s gonna be, right? Momiji, of course! He helped Tohru in her time of despair and he is the cutest of them all and I love Kyo but this one I can’t pass on. Point given to Momiji!
