Don’t let the title confuse you. It’s not me that is sorry about this review of Episode 19 of Fruits Basket. It is one of the characters, whom the very attentive viewers of this series might be able to easily connect to a certain mother that appeared some episodes back in an onsen. Let’s dive into this review and meet the monkey, Ritchan-san!
Japanese title: ごめんなさいーっ (Gomen’nasai)
Episode 19 – I’m So Sorry!
Someone is on their way to Shigure’s house, and they bump into the poor editor Mitchan, who races down the stairs to hunt Shigure down for his next overdue manuscript. Both break into a string of apologies, but clearly the unknown person wins. When the person arrives at Shigure’s house it turns out that this is Ritchan, one of the zodiacs. Ritchan is apologizing once again for coming without calling first and nearly breaks into a panic attack when Shigure answers ‘yes’ to the question ‘Am I bothering you?’. Tohru gets to meet Ritchan – who she calls Ritchan-san – and they start to bond. When Tohru runs into Ritchan, he suddenly turns into a monkey – because even though he wore a kimono and looked like a pretty woman, he is male. Shigure keeps using Ritchan for his horrible little games with Mitchan which leads Ritchan to trying to jump off the building’s roof. Tohru manages to talk him down and gives him and Mitchan new hope for their lives.
I feel so bad for the people he plays, but in this episode I had my biggest laugh with him. He is such a bright guy and enjoys tricking other people. Sometimes I wonder how much of it is faked, especially recently when his talks with Hatori sometimes turn so dark, but at least I had a good laugh out of it. Still, he should be nicer to Mitchan-san.
I’M SO SORRY
I am not too sure if I just like or love Ritchan, but I think my fond feelings are stronger than my annoyance by the endless apologizing. Wasn’t it a bit ironic that nobody tried to stop him from jumping off the roof? Is it that common to find him on top of some building, thinking about jumping and not daring to do it in the end? Thankfully, they have Tohru now! Show them how messed up their family is!
Tohru’s moving (?) words
For once I was not in tears when Tohru tried talking sense into one of the Soma family members. It was just too… out of this world? The three Somas staring at them on the roof, the wind blowing through their hair… It made me laugh because I felt that the situation was a bit stupid and with that all, my motivation to try to take her speech seriously was gone. It was still very true what she said. Everybody has to find their own reason for living. You can’t just give up. It is good to not have the nerve to do something like ending one’s life. Maybe if the character weren’t Ritchan-san, I could have taken it more seriously. With our drama queen, however, my tear ducts got a break and I could laugh a bit more than usually
Wasn’t it a cute scene when Mitchan-san and Ritchan-san became friends? I love that Mitchan boldly asked him to be friends. People hardly ever do that anymore, because ‘friendships need to come alone’. But, you know, sometimes it is good to hear that someone likes you from the first meeting and intends to meet you more often. It’s easier than both being insecure and shy and not daring to call/message the other. I wish someone would ask me if we could just be friends and hang out more to get to know each other after meeting for the first time. It would make life so much easier and less stressful.
Star of the show
I will be honest, I think I love Ritchan for the same reason I dislike him a bit. Because he is a tiny bit like me. Always apologizing, feels like they can’t do anything right, and in general doesn’t want to bother anyone. It’s so weak but also so understandable, after seeing where he was raised and how his mother is. My favorite quote however was also from him: ‘I’m sorry for even breating!’ Don’t be sorry, honey. We love you. Still, I had to laugh very hard. Also, when he couldn’t decide on which fruits to bring and he just brings… books about fruits? That was amazing. What I liked even more was that Shigure was actually reading the book, even though he complained in the beginning. He has a good heart after all.
Ayame is king
I am so happy someone admires Ayame. He deserves this. I need to see them together and Ayame teaching Ritchan to be self-confident.
This episode, it was really, really, really hard to decide who gave the most heart-skips. Ritsu is too beautiful to make my heart go dokidoki, because I think he is just too beautiful. Shigure was really mean this episode, so no dokidoki there either. And Yuki and Kyo had too little scenes to have any major impact this time. So I guess the point still goes to Ritchan-san? It’s his episode after all and he had me laugh many times. The best part probably was when he imagined Ayame eating soba. I like him admiring another person, I think! Point given to Ritchan!
