Fairy Gone’s plot feels so scattered right now and I feel lost. This week’s episode, I am sorry to report, was the most disappointing. Everything felt out of place and made no sense in piecing itself together. Ah, man this is not what I was hoping for.
Japanese Original Title: 黒い月と迷い子の唄
Veronica comes to Marlya’s rescue and fends off crazy Jonathan. Meanwhile, we’re given a glimpse into Veronica and Marlya’s past, when they were apart. Veronica warns Marlya to stay away from her. Free and Marlya somehow manage to complete their mission and recover the black fairy tome. Marlya and her new comrades celebrate the success of her first job with Dorothea.
Past: The beginning of the episode gives us a look into Veronica and Marlya’s past, especially the time when they were apart from one another. At first, I thought this was a great way to start the episode but it only left me confused. Veronica felt lost and empty and all we know, Ray Dawn is the cause of it all, when she attempts to kill him. Ray Dawn appeared in the first episode and was the main cause of Veronica and Marlya’s village being burned down. But I have no idea why! It was hard to feel any sympathy for Veronica even when she was ready to fire that gun because I don’t feel an attachment to characters introduced so abruptly and for whom you know nothing about.
During the focus on Marlya’s past, we’re only given the fact that her father died and her mother died giving birth to her. At a young age she started building up the mindset that it was her fault and that has becoming taxing upon herself. I get that Marlya sees Veronica as a goal to be a person who is loved by all, but It’s hard to make that emotional connection with Maryla. The flashback transition going from Veronica to Marlya was an interesting way to deliver the scene but I don’t feel it made enough impact. I am finding a hard time right now to feel emotionally connected towards Marlya and Veronica’s misfortune.
Jonathon Gone: I am glad Joker Jonathan didn’t stick around for long. He was a forgettable character whose only purpose was to be crazy and creep you out. Might I add Veronica’s fairy? You wouldn’t want to be killed by that.
Not The Old Me: Marlya kept repeating over and over ‘I’m Not The Old Me’ as she desperately wanted to help Veronica fight off Jonathan. What does that even mean? Does it mean she is a new person since joining Dorothea? I must have missed this quick transformation. Oh, this is funny.
Not Here To Screw Around: This was a saving grace from this episode being completely disappointing by a landslide. Free looks like he’s about to be defeated by Patricia, along with his fairy. It was amusing how Free smirks and tells his fairy to stop playing around and deliver that beautiful final blow. Ah, Free you were the only one I liked this entire episode.
A Wolf Appears: I have no idea who Wolfram was speaking to. This was a confusing episode.
Success? Patricia runs away, yay… Free got the book; good job guys, successful mission. Let’s just let the last few minutes of the episodes focus on celebrating this triumph. AGAIN, it’s hard to feel their happiness when everything during this episode was confusing and a mess. Marlya disconnected expression made those last few minutes disengaging big time.
Ah, what has Fairy Gone done this week… I feel disappointed and sad. This series is making it hard right now for me to really love it. This week’s episode was just all over the place. Fairy Gone’s story has not been great since the start and giving us a backstory during every start of a new episode will not cut it down every time. My issue overall is where is this all leading too. I feel so lost. It’s cool to display all these intriguing pieces of information regarding the ‘Black Fairy Tome’ and the background on Fairies but too many things are going on right now and the series doesn’t have a clear direction, yet.
My biggest concern is not just the plot but also the massive cast of characters. So far I only feel attachment towards Marlya and Free. For the rest I feel nothing, no connection, and that is worrying. Those rapid introductions are going to cost the series. Another Spring 2019 anime, Shield Hero, is doing a far superior job at showcasing its characters. I feel worried at this point for Fairy Gone.
This week was not good for Fairy Gone, and it hurts my anime heart to say that. It wasn’t enjoyable for me and here’s hoping for some turnaround.
Tell us in the comments your thoughts on Episode 5 and don’t forget to check out our other series for Spring 2019 we are reviewing!!
