Episode 5 of Eromanga Sensei asks a very important question: What would you do if you had a perverted step-sister that declares her attraction to you while you’re already very much in love with her? Well, I guess in Masamune’s case, you’d just suppress your feelings and try to focus on making some money.
Japanese Original Episode Title:妹とラノベ企画を創ろう
Sagiri gets to play videogames with Elf, and that somehow turns into the inappropriate use of Masamune’s webcam. Overexcited about being exposed to the body of a young female that is not her own, Sagiri decides that she needs to see more casual nudity in her life to become a better artist. Who would have known! Looks like I haven’t been wasting my time in life drawing after all.
Sagiri is in love with her step-brother. Yes. She rolls around in bed reading his script about her and blushing, fantasizing over god-knows-what. She makes an effort to come onto him, but he is a proper ONIISAN and he would never ever have lewd thoughts about his sister. Sagiri is not impressed and disciplines him by trying to perforate his eardrums.
Elf Yamada re-invades the Izumi household attempting to escape her editors who are hunting her down to make sure she works properly. Masamune take the opportunity to introduce her to Sagiri and encourages them to have some quality time together playing games. To his surprise, he comes home and finds himself staring at Elf flashing her underwear to Sagiri. That escalated quickly.
Sagiri feels inspired and requests more panties and more boobs, to provide her brother with material for his book. And that’s basically where all the female characters of the show come to play: to provide different body types for Sagiri to work on, since, as she said before, she doesn’t like drawing things she has not seen.
Masamune starts researching potential victims – I mean, women – who would willingly flash to an underage girl in order for her to provide her with material to improve her illustrations. Believe it or not, this is exactly what goes down in a life drawing session. Without any hint of sexual tension.
Themes & Trivia
めぐみ or 恵み: even though Megumi’s name is for some reason written in hiragana wherever I have checked (I am guessing for simplicity’s sake?), when in its full kanji form, the name translates as ‘Grace’.
Fan service: the first few minutes of the episode have absolutely no content, apart from giving an opportunity to the viewer to enjoy Sagiri’s graceful existence in different outfits. The ‘camera’ moves around her bum, thighs, and chest, without any shame whatsoever.
Panty-obsession: Since you watch anime, you’d probably not be surprised to find out that yes, female underwear are a very big thing in Japan. You may have also heard about the infamous used panties vending machines… Ugh. Bacteria. Biohazards. Armageddon.
Masamune came out quite strong in the beginning of the show, declaring his love for his sister a bit too blatantly for what I’m used to seeing in anime of the sort. Then everything was quickly balanced out by his passionate declaration of wanting to be her brother instead of her lover, because sibling love is a definite no-no (but they’re not siblings…?) The rest of the episode registered in my head as consequent shots of mild nudity, apart from that hilarious scene that Elf is unexpectedly found exposing herself in camera. I did laugh at that.
You should probably rethink your priorities, my friend.
Masamune, disregard your honour and your very confused feelings of dysfunctional parenthood towards your sister. You’re not even related. And the attraction is mutual. I mean come on. No, really, come on.
