A new adventure awaits Masato and Mamako, as Masato and the gang hit the books and go back to school to improve their power. A new mother-daughter pair also appears and the mother wants nothing but the best for her, even if it means sabotaging everyone else. What will Masato do? And why is Mamako in a student uniform?!
Plot & Story
Masato, Wise, and Porter enroll at a school called Lover’s Lane Academia, where they’re given an opportunity to level up by answering quest-related questions. There, Masato bumps into a beautiful girl named Medhi and her overbearing mother, Medhimama. The latter is confident in her daughter’s ability to best everyone else and uses her powers to help gain an edge. Once in class, Medhimama knocks everyone asleep to help raise her daughter’s skill points, much to the chagrin of Masato. Mamako sneaks herself into school later on wearing a high school uniform and observes Masato’s class. Unbeknownst to everyone else, she ends up taking all the points and glory for herself. She tells Masato, Wise, and Porter to look forward to seeing her in the next few classes.
We have some new characters introduced in the show: the shy healer Medhi and her overbearing mother Medhimama (glad to see some Mom puns again). I can only describe her as a typical tiger mom who expects obedience and grand results from Medhi. She also has an amusing ojou-sama laugh, which just adds to her over-the-top cockiness.
High School Heroine Mamako
Poor Masato’s being treated like a mama’s boy as of late and having Mamako attend his classes in a high school uniform doesn’t help. The power of anime essentially makes her look like she hasn’t aged at all and she could definitely blend in with the young girls. Once again, Mamako’s look and charms steal the show’s spotlight.
New Heroine Medhi
Although she didn’t get as much screen time this episode, Medhi proves to be a potential perfect heroine for Masato. She’s nice and pretty quiet for the most part and will likely join Masato’s party later. Though I suspect there might be something more to her than meets the eye.
The anime takes a more casual route this episode after our heroes defeated Wise’s powerful mom. Having wrestled with the existential crisis that comes with Mamako being way too overpowered, it’s funny seeing Masato and Wise try to take matters into their own hands, rather than be deadweights in their party. Unfortunately, Mamako has a way of sticking around, especially when it comes to Masato. There’s nothing worse than having your own mother shadow you at school and that huge wave of embarrassment hits Masato hard. The more I think about it, the more likely the chance the game’s system is rigged to Mamako’s favor. Perhaps it really is all for the improvement of the mother-child relationship.
As for our new characters, Medhimama continues the strange tradition of names based on their children with mama attached to them. She’s a fierce tiger mom who can be annoying for our heroes at times and will do anything to accomplish her goals. I suspect that Medhi, while appearing shy and obedient in the presence of her mother, may actually have a deep resentment towards her. This is shown when she curses under her breath in some scenes. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out later and if Medhi snaps back at Medhimama. There is something big brewing in the underbelly of the episode and it’ll most likely be up to Wise and Masato to deal with it.
It’s great to see more mother-child problems like these down the stretch because it really showcases the different types of stories they can tell if they stick to this element. Mamako will be a key character in relation to this because of her pure spirit and radiant energy. She can be used as a great mother to contrast with the many other mothers that are in the game. Her personality as a devoted mother is pretty much an idealized fantasy of what teen boys think mothers act like. To see how she interacts with mothers whose parenting styles are different shakes up the anime considerably and keeps it mildly entertaining. One thing that won’t change for Masato and some viewers as well is that mothers will always have a chance to embarrass you somehow. Good luck Masato.
Class is in Session
There are still plenty of chances for Masato, Wise, and Porter to collect more skill points. With Mamako’s help, hopefully they’ll be able to fend off Medhimama’s sabotage events. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
