It’s time for Wise to confront her mother and the stakes couldn’t be higher. Why is she going around wreaking havoc with a throne of shirtless guys at her beckoning? Can she and the rest of Masato’s party stop her from potentially destroying the game? Well, let’s find out!
Masato and his party find a dead Shirase pinned down to a tree branch. After reviving her, she explains that the Empress of Night has acquired a number of ‘cheat’ skills that are making her too powerful for the game mods to control. If they can stop her rampage, she tells them she’ll be more lenient in her punishment. They find the Empress of Night, who traps and separates Masato’s party. Wise and Masato do their best to defeat her, but are overwhelmed by her power. Wise tries talking to her mother and asks to reconcile, but is quickly rebuffed and knocked unconscious. Masato holds off the Empress of Night long enough for Mamako to free herself and join the battle. She takes on the Empress of Night and outmatches her in a duel between mothers. Soon after, Wise finds her mother transformed back to her normal self and starts arguing with her again. With the Empress of Night defeated, Masato learns to be more appreciative of Mamako, much to her delight, and his party marches on to their next adventure.
Kazuno (AKA Empress of Night)
Kazuno, the real name of Wise’s mother, is the most formidable opponent Masato’s crew has faced so far. Donning her Empress of Night form, her all-powerful cheating skills not only control hot men at her beckoning, but can manipulate the space around her. She controls all the programs of the game and wants to not only take over the virtual world, but the real world as well. Her motivations for doing so are downright silly, but this is a Mom isekai show we’re talking about.
Mamako Strikes Back
Mamako steals the show once again as the mother with the moral compass. She uses her good judgment and two hit multi target attacks to defeat the Empress of Night. It also seems that her relationship with Masato is improving, proven by how much she glows when thinking about that.
Ridiculous Spell Chants
The spell chants are getting ridiculous in this anime and that’s okay. Wise’s chants often sound like gibberish and Shirase is just blatant in her magical casting. But, let’s be honest, I think it’s just a fun way for her to flex her admin privileges.
This week’s episode highlights a mother-daughter intervention that gets resolved pretty decently. The strained relationship between Wise and Kazuno is tested when the latter says she should have never had Wise to begin with. That’s probably the worst kind of thing you can say to a child. Although Wise admits her mother embarasses her, she starts regretting how she pushed her away when she tried to reconcile. Thankfully, the anime doesn’t get too dramatic with this confrontation because, at the end of the day, it’s just a light-hearted adventure comedy.
Wise’s dilemma ties back and parallels some of the things Masato learned about his relationship with Mamako. Kids can be selfish and cruel and they can hurt their parents even when they don’t mean it. Kazuno has tried being a good parent to Wise all her life, but her failures boil down to a frustration that Wise is keeping her from living the best life she wants. I really like the ideal mother role Mamako plays: during their fight, she reminds Kazuno of the responsibilities of a mother. Even if they aren’t close and live in separate households, there’s still some kind of connection left. Family is family and most of the time family relations can be repaired.
We learn after the fight that Wise and Kazuno have similar personalities. I didn’t expect them to make up all the way by the end, but even if they aren’t super close now, the gap has closed a bit. After all, probably some of the most loving relationships involve daily squabbles and jabs at each other. Wise has found a way to move on and while I don’t know what to expect from her and Masato’s party, I’ll at least be looking forward to seeing Mamako save the day once again.
The first arc wrapped up pretty nicely. It’s great to see Masato gain more clarity and understanding for his mother and I look forward to where his party goes next. They’ve gained the trust of Shirase who tasks Masato’s party with future ‘quests’ and problems her crew can’t really fix. Something tells me they’ll be cleaning more of her messes in future episodes.
