The last episode of Dies IraeTV run foregoes all pretense that anyone else but the fans of the game have any chance of following all the different characters and the events that seem to be connected… somehow. With 6 more online episodes coming after this, Dies Irae might be a dream that came true for fans of the game, but for the rest of us, it was probably one of the weakest anime of the season.
Japanese Title: 自滅因子
Another episode where so many things happened but nothing really made sense. To be frank, however, we did learn a few things. Theresia is part of the whole mess and her connection to it is deeper than what we were led to believe. She is probably the equivalent of Virgin Mary and the great-granddaughter of Riza. We still don’t know what her exact role in all of this is, but the contrast between her and Rusalka was evident. The former embraced death while the latter, terrified of death, faked her love to that new(?) character Schreiber so that he would save her life. The fact that we know next to nothing about their prior relationship negated the importance of the scene.
And then, we had that flashback scene about Ren and Kasumi’s parents. It seems that their father chose their mother to continue a bloodline and Ren was brought in the family as the child of a deceased friend when in truth was bred in a tube to become LORD NAZI LORD HAIL LEADER ultimate opponent. It seems that Shirou, who enjoys killing a little too much, learned that Ren’s stepdad is doing experiments on him, probably through Social Media, and killed him. I guess that’s why they remained friends for so long, but it’s sad that they didn’t use the event earlier to give some depth to the character.
Alien: If you have seen the sci-fi franchise Alien, then the scene with Shirou coming out of her belly might have reminded you of a certain alien birth scene.
Ice: YES! MORE SKELETONS! Ok, I am not that excited about the new one, but it does make me wonder: can they summon a Captain Skeleton when all the skeletons are combined? Is there a heart skeleton?
Bey: How fracked up was that scene? That girl inside of him was both his mother and sister? I guess we will never know what was the deal with the little vampire lady, since Bey was turned to pieces from Ice Skeleton.
Themes & Trivia
Eugenics: One of the most controversial subjects in social philosophy, eugenics is a set of beliefs and practices whose aim is to improve the genetic quality of a human population. It mostly associates with selective breeding, where people with desired traits and encouraged to reproduce while people with undesired traits are sterilized.
This is the last episode when it comes to its TV run. Dies Irae is going to have 6 more online episodes, which, and I must be totally frank with you, I am not sure if we are going to cover, since MANGA.TOKYO is focusing on what will be available to you through online streaming. If Crunchyroll decides to continue with the rest of the series, there is a chance that we will as well.
I’m not sure I have either the strength to sit down and put two and two together or go through the game to fill in the missing pieces. Marie aside, most of the characters failed to keep my attention and I don’t really care what is going to happen to them. Dies Irae is not one of those anime that is going to be kept in my memory for long. Except Marie. Damn that song was creepy.
