Having had a pretty rough weekend, I have to admit seeing the words ‘succubus’ and ‘adult’ in the same sentence made me pee in my pants a little. Rejoice, the next episode is here, and yes, it uses the word SEX quite a lot. So get ready. For SEX.
Japanese Original Episode Title: サキュバスさんはいい大人
Now that I have your attention, let’s focus on the fact that being a full-blown succubus is a serious thing and totally not funny. Having whomever you want fall to his knees when he is around you and shake with aphrodisiac sensations overwhelming his body, is not cool. Now let’s make the assumption that we live in a world where women do not get raped, and that scenario would be hilarious. Let’s read the rest of this review on that assumption and emphasize on the word SEX a lot, along with the casual inappropriate boob joke that might occur.
Sakie-san, the school mathematician, lives isolated in the forest and gets hammered to sleep at night. She is inhumanly sexy, obviously has massive breasts, and her aphrodisiac powers are so strong people sleeping around her get wet dreams if she loses her focus. She has decided to stay as far away from males as possible, which is why she takes the first and last train home, something that causes her great discomfort and crappy sleeping patterns. If you’ve ever worked double shifts, you probably know what this feels like.
Due to her lack of sleep she almost falls, only to be rescued by the also very (even though not inhumanly, let’s be honest) sexy Tetsuo. He acts cool upon touching her hand, and she is amazed by how well-behaved and chilled he can be around her. Needless to say, he is secretly about to explode in his pants. Not very surprisingly, she now has a crush on him. That makes her and the dullahan, two out of the four leading characters falling for Tetsuo-chan and his big manly arms; not bad. What a subtle harem aesthetic. *sips tea*
The vampire keeps hanging out around Tetsuo as well, under the pretext of a strong heatwave. They quickly get into an awkward conversation where the word SEX is being repeated a significant number of times. Tetsuo spews out a lot of uninteresting academic sex-talk that makes everyone confused, and the conversation ends with Hikari pecking his cheek and saying that ‘kissing is easier that sucking blood.’ That looks like three out of four already.
In the meantime, Kyoko-chan confesses her feelings about Tetsuo and his massive arms to Sakie-san, who is not happy to hear about it. They engage in yet another awkward (still hilarious) talk on what they like about him, where Sakie-san acts completely immature. Kyoko is looking for romantic advice, but gets a manifestation of a very insecure adulthood instead.
Last but not least, the snow-girl overhears a couple of her classmates bad-mouthing her. She freaks out and ends up sulking frozen in a corner, where Tetsuo finds her.
Themes & Trivia
Succubus: In Mesopotamian mythology, succubi were night-demons, sons and daughters of Lilith who took female form to have sex with men. Their male version is an incubus. Hilarious what people come up with to justify their need to get laid. As with anything that has to do with sexualized women, succubi are quite popular in anime.
Tetsuo: Anyone else feeling like this name has been forever ruined by Akira?
Teacher/student romance: A fantasy of many, the realm of anime is overflown with examples of the genre. I unfortunately remember watching My Wife is a High-school Girl almost 10 years ago. If you prefer, there is also My Wife is the Student Council President. Ew.
If I were a succubus, I would be having the fun of my life. Sorry Sakie-san, you can keep your views of romance to yourself. Yay, next episode we’ll hopefully be done with character introductions, and we can sit back, relax, and watch high-school women drool and fight over Takahashi-sensei. Yay.
