Japanese title: ダーリン・イン・ザ・フランクス
While Plantations 13 and 26 are ‘kissing’, a horde of Klaxosaurs are attracted by the enormous amount of magma resources and the number of enemies is higher than expected. Each plantation’s parasites are divided into two squads. Squad 26 is to defend on the front, Squad 13 in the middle and Strelizia is the last defender, which stands before the plantations. The smaller Klaxosaurs get defeated with minor problems, but the big blocked Klaxosaurs transform into a giant humanlike monster and is not an easy match. Squad 26 has to retreat and Squad 13 takes over with Strelizia as their last chance. As Hiro collapses, Strelizia is unable to move. Hiro seems to be dead but sees Zero Two in front of him, not giving up yet. He recovers from his tumor-like sickness and is able to fight together with the rest of his Squad and defeats the giant Klaxosaur. Dr. Franxx mentions that Hiro might be able to fulfill Zero Two’s wish and Zero Two has to defeat a lot more Klaxosaurs.
The giant transformable Klaxosaur in this episode was a ‘Gutenberg-class‘ Klaxosaur. There is one Gutenberg I could think of and this guy is Johannes Gutenberg. Gutenberg was a German goldsmith, printer, blacksmith, and publisher, who created the printing press in Europe. He invented mechanical movable type printing and revolutionized the standards of printing. Some of his contributions to printing are adjustable molds, mechanical movable type, and so on. This Klaxosaur could transform by moving his parts into various directions. Therefore the use of the name Gutenberg for this class could be a hint to Johannes Gutenberg.
From the conversation of Ichigo and Hiro
Ichigo: ‘I’ve always thought of you as a sibling.’
Hiro: ‘Yeah, same here. I’m sure Goro feels the same, too.’
The episode starts off with a bunch of Klasosaurs heading towards the kissing plantations and the parasites preparing for the big battle. Before they get to ride their Franxx, Ichigo wants to talk to Hiro in order to stop him but just couldn’t, and then it looked like she was trying to confess her feelings but was interrupted by Zero Two and she ended up saying that Hiro was like a sibling to her and he said he felt the same. Ouch, this was the worst response, which you really don’t want to hear from your crush. Ichigo said it first, even though she does not feel that way. I guess that the way it went was the best one, because if she had confessed to Hiro it would have left them in an awkward state as Hiro doesn’t seem to be romantically interested in Ichigo. He only has eyes for Zero Two.
When the battle began and Squad 26 showed off their teamwork, I just thought ‘Hm? They defeated one Klaxosaur at once as a group of five. Squad 13’s parasites were all impressed by their good teamwork, but at first, they did not seem to be as strong as I thought. Then they took on about four to five at once, which was much cooler, but no one beats Strelizia. She was there and stacked them up in order to spear them all at once. She is really a cool Franxx but I started to like the designs of the other Franxx too.
Ichigo showed her best performance that fight, although she claimed not to have slept enough. Hiro was in a bad state. His ‘tumor’ grew and grew and he was already sweating and not able to give his best. He did well until the big Klaxosaur, the ‘Gutenberg-class’, transformed into a human form. I really wish they would inform us what these classes exactly mean or how Klaxosaurs have to be structured in order to fall into these classes. Before we had the Conrad-class and this time it was called a Gutenberg-class one. All I saw at first was just a big dice with horns on its sides and then it could transform itself into a ‘human-like’ Klaxosaur and later into a modern battering ram.
While the battering ram is trying to break through the walls of a plantation, Hiro is kind of dead. He sees a place, thinks he is dead and that it is okay that way because he did his best. He is questioned by his former partner Naomi, who claims that he has always been that way, giving up instead of trying again. I was a bit freaked out to see Zero Two trying to operate Strelizia on her own, having red eyes and showing her sharp teeth while exhaling in exhaustion. How was Hiro able to cure his ‘tumor’ and get back on his feet? Did he feel needed by Zero Two and wanted to help her defeat the Klaxosaurs instead of giving up again? His back hug!! How romantic of him to give Zero Two a back hug and bring her back to her normal state. With them both conscious together, Strelizia seemed stronger than ever.
All the parasites, staff, and Dr. Franxx are relieved that the fight is over and Hiro’s vital signs changed back to normal. Dr. Franxx mentions that Hiro might be the key to fulfilling Zero Two’s wish, but she never really revealed anything. When Hiro asked her why she was fighting, she only said: ‘Because I’m a monster.’ And at the end of the episode, she said she has to kill more Klaxosaurs. Does that mean that she has to kill these creatures in order to become ‘normal’? To lose the ‘monster’ status?
Kiss of Death MV
The music video for the Darling in the Franxx’s opening theme ‘Kiss of Death’ by Mika Nakashima, produced by Hyde, has been uploaded on the official website of the anime and will pop-up when you open the page. There is also a banner on the left side titled ‘Kiss of Death (Produced by Hyde) MV’. The music video will be available for a limited time until 19 February 0:00 (JST). A short music video and making of can be found on Nakashima’s official YouTube channel but sadly the video has been region-locked and is only viewable in Japan. I am not sure if you can watch the MV on the official website, but I still wanted to share my thoughts about it.
This MV features Mika Nakashima with horns, white tank top, black pants, black under-knee socks, and spiked black and white colored high-heels. I kind of like the video, because she looks a bit like Zero Two with her horns and long hair. As it is a full CG production, there are some strange moments, which I don’t really like and find unnecessary. For example, when she’s sweeping her hand from one side of her face to the other and just smears it up… it looks so creepy when she does that. Her outfit is really sexy but I would have worn other shoes than these. In my opinion, her open high-heels are ugly and can’t be worn with these socks. I would have given her black knee boots instead. I don’t really understand why the chair suddenly explodes and flies into her direction or the light bulb that’s swinging around. I absolutely love her one wing, because it resembles the one-winged bird Hiro and Zero Two were talking about and because the bird is also part of the lyrics. I would have wished for a bird to fly around or two each with one wing and to see Hyde as ‘reaper’ instead of her. That would have been nice. All in all the song is awesome and fits the anime perfectly.
Please let me know if you could watch it and how you liked it!
Why did Plantation 26’s leader’s Franxx run out of fuel so fast? Are the tanks so small they are not able to last one fight, or did they forget to fill it? I felt so ewww when one of Squad 26’s guys talked to the leader via Franxx and was on his screen. It was ok for the main Plantation’s stamen to talk through their Franxx, but this time it felt so weird. While we’re on this topic, why is for example Zero Two not talking directly to Hiro but through Strelizia on his screen? This must be so complicated.
Before the episode ended, three mysterious characters were watching Zero Two from quite a distance. Who are these ‘boys’ and what do they have to do with Zero Two? We will see what happens in next episode on 24 February 2018!
