Episode 17 – Eden
The Nines suddenly arrive at Mistilteinn and claim that the papa-tachi send them to check on Squad 13 and even want to sleep over. Zero Two is not pleased to see them, but the rest are relieved to have contact and not to be abandoned. As one of the Nines wanders around, he encounters Kokoro at night and picks up her ‘Your first childbirth’ book that she lost. The next day, Kokoro and Mitsuru are together inside the greenhouse talking about their lives at Mistilteinn when Kokoro suddenly starts unzipping Mitsuru’s upper uniform. Zorome stops them and startled Mitsuru from attacking Kokoro.
Later, the Nines confront Kokoro with her book that shouldn’t be in her possession as it is not the appropriate way of ‘creating’ children and confuse Squad 13 members. Kokoro confesses that she wants to make a baby in order to leave something behind. Hiro helps Mitsuru to discover his feelings for Kokoro, which leads him to kiss and sleep with her.
In the meanwhile, APE members visit the Princess of Klaxosaurs to bring her down but get killed by her.
The Nines pay Squad 13 a visit and their leader says that they have been sent by papa-tachi, because they are worried and that Nana and Hachi know the reason why Squad 13 has not been invited to gather all the other squads. I can’t really believe the words of the Nines, because all they say sounds so fake and not sincere. Episode 17 explains this a little. The young children are all trained to become pilots one day to defend the adults. Their training seems to be pretty rough and we have seen that they even lose their emotions, the ability to show joy, anger, sorrow, and so on. That brings us to Nana and Hachi, who are also kind of emotionless, although I believe that Nana did show her anger sometimes. Even Dr. Franxx mentioned something like a training that Nana and Hachi went through. Why did she collapse now when Kokoro revealed her wish to make a baby and asked for the purpose of their feelings? Could there be a connection to the reproductive system that only children have to be able to pilot a Franxx? Do the adults in Darling in the Franxx all lose this ability or is it just a farce of APE to stop their warriors from thinking outside the box and to start living their own lives? Nobody is allowed to even talk about baby-making and most of them didn’t know how children were born. As long as the papa-tachi didn’t teach anybody, the secrets would be secrets forever. However, how could they have been so reckless not to destroy all evidence of previous human beings and their ‘forbidden’ topics? It was just about time that someone revealed the truth about human beings and their purpose in life. Because it is really annoying that the kids thought papa-tachi were creating children instead of being born by two parents. They must have been so brainwashed in order to believe this lie. Kokoro is one of the first to actually feel an urge to explore the opposite gender’s bodies and I think this is mostly because of her little book, which revealed a lot to her. She has started to think of trying to make a baby some time ago. She had found her purpose in life and wanted to share it with Mitsuru. She seemed to be so happy to learn about this different way of living.
Thanks to Hiro’s talk to Mitsuru, he realizes that he likes Kokoro more than he could have imagined! I mean, the kiss, the bed scene and the way she undressed him, in the beginning, were my favorite moments in this episode.
However, let’s not forget how cute Zero Two has acted in this episode! She is getting cuter and cuter now that they didn’t have to fight against Klaxosaurs. Did you see the little horns growing out of Hiro’s forehead? He is becoming a ‘monster’ like Zero Two. We just don’t know whether it is because he licked the blood of her knee when she was hurt or because he rode Strelizia with Zero Two. I don’t really care if he loses the humanness since I think they’re a good and cute match now.
It is kind of sad to hear, that Zero Two can’t give birth to children, although how could she know about her insides if she too never learned anything else? There must be a different way for her and now Hiro to ‘create’ their little baby.
The answer to one of my previous questions ‘Who told Zero Two that she can become a human by killing Klaxosaurs?’ has been answered by Zero Two herself. She told us that papa-tachi showed her this way.
My What-Is-Going-On? Moments
Did you see how Kokoro was ready to strip Mitsuru in order to make babies? Such a brave girl trying to explore the unexplored. She must have been in trance that time because her face portrayed a different Kokoro.
Ikuno gets angry at Alpha’s harsh words because he says that it is a burden to need both genders in order to fly the Franxx and slaps him. He must have stricken a chord to make her so angry. Could there be a relation to the anime’s new opening, where Ikuno seems to be pretty close to Ichigo? Ikuno also tried to pilot a Franxx with Ichigo, so there must be some one-sided love going on in Ikuno.
Princess of Klaxosaurs
There she is, the Princess of Klaxosaurs! APE members must really be stupid to visit her and ask her to surrender… They did not think this plan through and got killed.
Who is this ‘girl’ and is she related to Zero Two? And where is her hideout? Is it inside or beneath the Grand Crevasse?
In the End
It’s finally out! The little book revealed a lot to those children that were taught something totally different about reproduction and even left some of them speechless. Darling in the Franxx’s next episode is to air on 19 May with some more heart throbbing action!
