The fights in Darling in the Franxx are getting intense since more and more Klaxosaurs have to be defeated. In between, we’ve got boys and girls realizing how they feel and what these feelings mean. The 15th episode aired on 21 April and was really romantic at some point!

Episode 15 – Jian
Squad 26 and the Nines are fighting against a gigantic Klaxosaur number to seize the Grand Crevasse on papa-tachi’s behalf. They are being supported by Strelizia in stampede mode, as Zero Two seems to ride her Franxx alone. Squad 13 is sent to cooperate and to terminate the enemies without Hiro when suddenly a super Lehnmann-class Klaxosaur appears from the depths and destroys Plantation 26. Squad 26 members get the order for self-destruction to stop the giant Klaxosaur from platting Plantation 13, but the Klaxosaur is too big and too strong to be stopped. It heads towards Plantation 13, breaks through its walls and sends smaller Klaxosaurs inside. Hiro changes his mind and wants to see Zero Two, takes a training unit and rides it to the battlefield, where Ichigo and Goro rescue him. Goro leaves the cockpit and Ichigo takes him to Strelizia. Hiro brings Zero Two, who is still in a rage and has long red horns growing out of her head, back to sanity. Strelizia, filled with new power, destroys all enemies and even the giant Klaxosaur, but not his core. When the core is about to explode and Squad 13 seems to be helpless, a colossal hand appears, destroys the core and leaves Plantation 13 and the children unharmed.
Terms and Lingo
The Lehmann-class Klaxosaur that appeared in this episode seems to be named after the Danish seismologist Inge Lehmann. Lehmann discovered that at a depth of 220 +/- 30 km, especially under continents, seismic waves’ movements abruptly increase. Her discovers are called the ‘Lehmann discontinuity’.
The papa-tachi ordered Squad 26 to conduct Protocol 32 and the members held some kind of bombs to destroy the giant Klaxosaur. Therefore I think that Protocol 32 means self-destruction.
Where should I begin? Hiro has been left alone because he’s got no partner and no Franxx to ride. Not to forget that he might not be completely cured physically. He told his friends to take care, but instead, the giant Klaxosaur and its little helpers were about to destroy Plantation 13. By the way, the Lehmann-class Klaxosaur reminded me of the Titanic when it emerged from beneath. You might know the scene where the Titanic sinks at first but then emerges from the water, like its saying ‘Hey I am back!’ and then drowns again.
Grand Crevasse… what is hidden inside or beneath Grand Crevasse that is so precious to the papa-tachi that they let their children getting killed? I have so many theories in my head. One idea is that APE is the reason that the Klaxosaurs are attacking them because they are stealing Klaxosaurs’ precious magma. It is about the same with us humans stealing land from animals, which equals to their foods and homes. Another one is that APE created these monsters but failed at controlling them…
But enough of Klaxosaurs and back to our cute couple Hiro and Zero Two. When Hiro came to see Zero Two, Goro left Delphinium in order for Hiro to ride with Ichigo to Strelizia and eventually to Zero Two. Why did Goro leave his Franxx? Couldn’t they just carry Hiro on a hand or other body part outside of Delphinium? Why did he have to leave the cockpit so that Ichigo and Hiro piloted? Did he think of it as a last gift to Ichigo? He might want them to be alone, to be able to connect because they previously couldn’t do so. He is such a poor and lovable guy. I hope that Goro and Ichigo come together in the end. Then Hiro and Ichigo finally reach Zero Two, but Ichigo clobbers her to teach her a lesson and left everyone astonished.
So Hiro reaches out for Zero Two, but she was not in a conscious state and looked like a monster with her long horns and tired face. They somehow connect by Hiro touching Zero Two’s horns and talking to her. We see how hard Zero Two tried not to forget Hiro and what he taught her, even though she had to withstand painful treatments. Her first three words she learned were ‘boku’, ‘Zero Two’, and ‘darling’. Now, that was the moment where I realized that’s why she’s using the personal pronoun ‘boku’ instead of ‘watashi’ or ‘atashi’. Because Hiro used ‘boku’ to refer to himself, she copied it. He brings her back, breaks one of her horns and her face suddenly changes to soft facial traits. That was so romantic! They kiss and say ‘I love you’ and everyone could hear it because they forgot to turn off the speakers. Oh and not to forget Strelizia! She is all hyped and more powerful than she has ever been. She even got a new red outfit. Destroying the Lehmann-class Klaxosaur was just a piece of cake. When Zero Two told Hiro that she loves him, Strelizia’s face was so cute and she even shed digital tears.
Now that I saw how Dr. Franxx treated Zero Two and also Hiro after he ran off with her, I would like to see Zero Two going berserk and just bite Dr. Franxx’s head off.
My What-Is-Going-On? Moments
Nines like it the other way around
There, we finally have couples riding their Franxx the other way around! The Nines’ member Alpha and another guy where in the front where usually the pistils are located. Why are they in the front? And what’s with their ‘horns’? Are Nines’ members like Zero Two, or maybe clones created out of her blood cells? They seem to be pretty strong, but I guess we won’t have to wait much longer for further details on them.
What was that? A colossal hand suddenly appears and saves them? Or did the hand just miss them by a finger? I don’t even want to imagine how big of a size the rest of the Klaxosaur is…
Strange ball containing human being?
We saw a strange ball hitting the ground and revealing a human child covered in gold. Where did this ‘child’ come from and what exactly is it? Is this the way pilots are born? But then why there and at this time?
In the End
Episode 15 felt like the last episode of the series, but then the strange ball and giant hand appeared and made me all waku waku (lit. be thrilled/ nervous about something) for the next one!
