The title of this week’s episode says it all: ‘Only a diamond can polish a diamond’ and in Bungo Stray Dogs’s case Chuuya and Dazai are definitely the gems of the series.
Japanese Original Episode Title: ダイヤはダイヤでしか
Randou uses his ability to create a subspace under his control outside the normal laws of physics, where Chuuya’s powers seem to have no effect. He also unleashes another aspect of his power which is the ability to control one corpse that was stored in his subspace, and in this case he uses the previous boss of the Port Mafia, in order to psychically attack Dazai. Randou reveals that he used to be a foreign spy that came to Japan eight years ago with his partner to inspect a powerful entity hold by the Japanese government. His partner betrayed him and died in the process. Unable to fight back the military he tried to store Arahabaki but failed to do so and resulted in the explosion that formed Suribachi city and Chuuya, who he claims to be merely a human vessel. Chuuya kills Randou and after passing away he visits his grave but is confronted, ambushed, and attacked by Shiraze and the Sheep, who partnered with GSS to kill him. Using his powers to escape, he is approached by Dazai with an offer from Mori to join the Port Mafia. Chuuya accepts, demanding that they do not hurt the Sheep which Dazai accepts. Chuuya is given a hat from Randou’s possessions as part of a ritual in the Port Mafia for a junior to receive a belonging from the senior who invited them, and swears loyalty to Mori. Seven years later, Ango is making a report on these events and mentions that Randou’s partner was still alive all along.
Randou’s powers are amazing: So this guy can create his own subspace and can literally control space, but on top of that he even has the ability to store one corpse and control it as a supernatural being? Talking about being overpowered… And even worse he wanted to store Arahabaki as that supernatural being. If that had happened in the past, he would have truly been unstoppable. Nevertheless, he was still defeated by our boys. I still don’t really get the fact that he was always cold. Does it have to do with the fact that it’s always cold in space or something?
His existence is heretical: I found the way that Randou described Dazai’s power extremely poetic and well-put. I also loved all the nice quotes that Dazai mentioned during that scene: ‘To die isn’t the opposite of living, it’s merely a component of the process of life.‘ Can we also take a moment to appreciate how cunning and smart he truly is? Not to mention the fact that he is starting to become a cold-blooded and sadistic killer. Oh Dazai, you have come such a long way!
I didn’t expect that backstabbing: When Shiraze was talking to Chuuya, I really didn’t see the stabbing coming. I was expecting the Sheep to betray him or something but not to the point of actually trying to murder him. Also, I thought it was quite weird for someone as powerful as Chuuya not to sense the presence of such a large ARMED group of people approaching him.
Themes & Trivia
Randou’s name: His real name is Arthur Rimbaud, who was a French poet known for his influence on modern literature and arts, which prefigured surrealism. Born in Charleville-Mézières, he started writing at a very young age and excelled as a student, but abandoned his formal education in his teenage years to run away from home to Paris amidst the Franco-Prussian War. During his late adolescence and early adulthood he began the bulk of his literary output, then completely stopped writing at the age of 21, after assembling one of his major works, Illuminations (hence the name of Randou’s powers).
It’s also worth mentioning that Rimbaud was known to have been a libertine and a restless soul, having engaged in an at times violent romantic relationship with fellow poet Paul Verlaine, which lasted nearly two years. So it’s safe to assume that Randou’s partner is named by Verlaine.
The scene of Mori giving Chuuya the hat and explaining the tradition of Port Mafia and how he gave his coat to Dazai was actually quite sweet and also made me feel that the Port Mafia, even though they kill people for a living, is actually a very honorable organization with culture and customs that really make you think that they might not be the bad guys in this.
All for this organization and the protection of this beloved city.
Mori is such a fascinating character to me and I honestly want to learn more about his abilities so badly. He is insanely smart and has the image of a true Godfather. Those mafia vibes were very intense.
