Was it me or was Episode 4 of Blue Exorcist -Kyoto Impure King Arc- (Ao no Exorcist: Kyoto Fujouou-Hen) full of drama? Thankfully we finally got some answers. It all starts with Suguro looking how he normally looks: Angry as hell.
Japanese Title: 背信棄義
Suguro is thinking about the past meeting where everyone was accusing his father of being the traitor. So there is Suguro, walking down a long ass hallway, crestfallen, thinking about how he’s going to confront his father and get the truth out of him, when he spots Juzo looking out of a window. Those who watched the last episode know he was actually keeping an eye on Mamushi, whom he suspects to be involved in this whole mess. However Suguro doesn’t know this.
But yeah, I think we can all agree that looking out of windows is not a suspicious act in itself, but since everyone is suspecting everyone, that seemed to be enough to trigger Suguro who proceeds to sneak up on Juzo. That leads to a series of events where it’s revealed that the traitor was none other than Mamushi Hojo.
To be honest, this bothered me a little. Ever since the famous meeting where Juzo and Mamushi were at each other’s throats, I was frantically looking at the other characters for the traitor. I mean, it couldn’t be that simple, that obvious, could it? Surely, they’re trying to distract us from the real traitor. Well, sadly, that was not the case. Or, hey, maybe it was an act of making the obvious so obvious it’ll trick you.
Either way, we have Mamushi claiming they’re all a bunch of idiots who don’t realize the leader Tatsuma Suguro is actually the evil villain here and that Tatsuma has been working together with Mephistos all this time to steal the King’s eyes for their evil purposes. How does she know that? Well, because Mr. Todo told her, so it must be true, right?! Jeez. Don’t misunderstand me. I do believe something is going on with Tatsuma (although I’m pretty sure is nothing evil), but that’s because I watch the series and see what’s going on. Mamushi only has the word of a teacher, so this is another thing that bugged me a bit. How come this girl who seems so sure of herself, who has always worked along his family and Myoda members to protect what they all believe in, suddenly decides everything is a lie because some dude told her so? Then again, there’s this part when Juzo is making a last attempt to convince Mamushi that she’s being manipulated by Todo, but she goes on to state that nobody is manipulating her and that she’s actually the mastermind behind this all.
We’ve learned from his previous encounter with Yukio that this Todo guy likes to read into people and take advantage of their fears and doubts, so maybe Mamushi has always, deep down, wanted this. She believed Todo because it suited her, even if it was not the logical thing. It would justify the way she has always felt and Todo saw the potential is this. We will have to wait to see if there’s some character development coming up or if this girl is just gullible as hell.
Also, in this episode, after so many candles being unfairly sacrificed and tortured, Rin finally manages the assignment Shura had given him. Yes, there’s still a long way to go for him, but this surely gives us hope for the future. Or it would, if only Rin hadn’t ruined everything by blowing up his cover in front of everybody and their mothers.
Sure enough, after witnessing that scene with Suguro and Tatsuma that irremediably reminded him of his father’s last moments, Rin felt like he had to intervene to try avoid history repeating itself, maybe. We know Rin is full of good intentions, but I would say that what he really needs is to chill. Then again, him not being chill at all is kind of part of his charm for some people. And in case any of you were wondering, now we know what the ring in his tail is for! To control him like the animal they believe him to be. Messed up, if you ask me. For the moment, he will apparently be locked up, and to be honest, we can only hope his little outburst helped the Suguro’s family drama a little.
Suguro demanding his father the truth of what the hell was going on was something I’m sure we were all expecting, because we all want to know what the hell is really going on. But you heard the man, it’s a secret… I just hope it’s not an obvious one like the traitor thing.
Oh, and I’m really grateful we didn’t have Konekomaru whining on this episode too.
