Things pick back up in Episode 3 of Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond. This time around we get to hang out with the members of Libra during their downtime. But, like most things in the Kekkai Sensen series, you can bet it’ll be a wild ride! Drinking contests, magical mischief, and justice await in this week’s action packed episode!
Japanese Original Episode Title: Day In Day Out
The members of Libra have the day off! Leo get’s mugged, Zapp has to find a missing cat, Chains hits up a local bar, and Steven throws a swanky party for some friends. It’s nice to see everyone taking it easy for once…
It’s your own fault you got stepped on: Remember how I said that all the crazy stuff that goes down in Hellsalem’s Lot is just another day in the life for the residents of the city? Well, the series wants to make sure they drive that point home. The episode opens with a giant monster of the week on a leisurely stroll through the streets of the city. Of course emergency personnel are on the scene, informing the citizens of the impending danger, and of course, they even offer a helpful PSA: All citizens in his path, please accept personal responsibility to avoid him. That’s right, they warn the citizens to take care not to get stepped on by a giant monster…
Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned: One of Zapp’s lovers is upset when no one seems to care about her missing cat… and when another of Zapp’s lovers mocks her, homegirl gets even in the most brutal way possible. *clears throat* She uses magic to blow up the other woman’s breasts. Yeah, let that sink in for a sec. But, wait, there’s more. She then turns her magic on Zapp’s… er… man meat.
Now with more fan service: There were considerably more boob shots in this episode. So, if you’ve been hoping for a little more fan service from the Libra crew, this is the episode for you! There’s even a nice shot of Zapp’s ass for the ladies (or gent, I mean it is a nice ass)…
It’s my day off: We get to see what the Libra crew do when they aren’t out fighting supernatural critters around Hellsalem’s Lot: Zapp spends time with his lady friends, the stoic Chains hangs out at bars, and Steven entertains his high society friends at his swanky upscale apartment… normal stuff. But, when your day job is a superhuman crime fighter, work has a way of coming home with you, whether you like it or not, so it’s best to always be prepared. Case in point, Steven, not only immobilizes an entire room of assassins without breaking a sweat, but he also has a personal hit squad that step in to clean up the bodies… Let’s just say Steven is now one of my favorite characters in the series!
Themes & Trivia
Goodness to a fault: Ever wonder why someone as OP as Leo always gets the stuffing kicked out of him? I mean he has the ability to control people with his eyes, but he only ever uses it at the absolute last possible moment. Well, it’s because he doesn’t believe in using his powers for personal gain. Kind of makes getting your ass handed to you on a regular basis seem a bit more noble.
It’ll cost you an arm and a leg: When two thugs can’t pay their bar tab, the bartender reveals that folks who don’t pay with cash, pay with their bodies… and not, in the sexy way.
Thinking with his d***: One of Zapp’s lovers sends him on the noble quest of finding her cat, a task that would normally be beneath someone as awesome as Zapp. So, homegirl gives him an extra incentive: she puts his mini Zapp in a magical vice grip that will chop off his manhood if he doesn’t find the cat before the end of the day… Now that’s how you motivate a man!
Can you help a brotha out? Leo accidentally bumps into some scary looking thugs on the street, prompting Sonic to flee the scene (not that he’d have been much help if he’d stayed). But, that’s not even the best part. Badass werewolf Chains sees Leo about to get his ass kicked, and instead of helping the poor guy out, she pretends like she doesn’t see him. Of course, Leo gets beat within an inch of his life, but you’d have thought someone would have stepped in and helped the kid out.
YES!! This week’s episode brought back all the fun hijinks I’ve come to associate with the Kekkai Sensen series! I’ve said this before, but I really like the less plot heavy episodes, since they give the characters a chance to shine, rather than focusing on building up an elaborate story arc. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy the episodes that delve into the events surrounding the Great Collapse and the formation of Hellsalem’s Lot; sometimes a little background info is a good thing. I just feel like the Kekkai Sensen series has a rather unique and dynamic cast of characters, some of which don’t necessarily conform to a linear narrative. It’s the reason many of the characters wound up on the cutting room floor last season. They just didn’t fit in with the story the anime was trying to tell…
Sorry, rant over… *ahem* So, about that fan service… On one hand, I am happy to see they’re giving my girl Chains more screen time, on the other hand, did it have to involve all that fan service?! Can’t we just have a bad-ass female character without having to resort to cleavage shots? Maybe?
Even Superman Takes A Day Off
So, yeah, this was a fun episode. We got to see a different side of some of the background characters, and I have to say, I like what I saw (looking at you Chains)! There were some things I could have lived without, but overall I really enjoyed this return to the more lighthearted episodic format. Hopefully, they keep it up…
What did you guys think of the episode? Were you happy about the return to form or do you want a bit more plot to balance out the hijinks? Did you appreciate the additional fan service or did you think it was out of place? Drop a line in the comments section!
