This is it!! This is the last episode of Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond, it’s time to say goodbye to all the mayhem and supernatural hijinks. Yes, I know, I’m a little sad too, but this week’s episode ends things on a high note!
Japanese Original Episode Title: 妖眼幻視行 前編
Michella and Leo are the puppets of Dr. Gamimozu, an evil entity from the Beyond, who is hellbent on taking Leo’s eyes as his own. Will Leo be able to fight off the doctor’s control and save his sister or will this be the end of our hapless hero?
Dramatic walking: The episode opens with a depressed Leo walking dejectedly in the rain, all set to a rather downbeat jazz tune. But, after the day he had in the last episode, he’s more than earned a bit of moping. Of course, the episode is having none of that and literally knocks some sense into our hero.
Scenery Porn: I’ve praised the background artwork of the show in the past, but this takes it to a whole different level! The placid lake scenes are so beautifully rendered. It’s just so breathtaking! The way the light shimmers over the clear blue water or the vivid greenery of the surrounding forest, *swoon* it’s like looking at a painting!
Epic Soundtrack: Somehow, the soundtrack in this episode is much more dramatic than it was in previous episodes. There are a lot more bass heavy pieces that convey an overall feeling of suspense and melancholy a stark contrast to the upbeat tone of the rest of the series.
Special Attack: Usually Leo just uses his eye powers without any fanfare, but, for the first time in the entire series, Leo gets his very own special attack, Vision Shuffle!
Bookend: The season ends the same way it began, with Femt releasing a horde of demon beasts on the city… chaos ensues.
Themes & Trivia
Butterflies of hope: Whenever Leo is at a particularly low point, a butterfly can be seen somewhere on the screen, usually in the background. This time around you can see butterflies gracing the screens of what used to be Time Square during Leo’s dramatic moping in the rain sequence. Now, if you’ll remember from Season 1, Leo’s ‘girlfriend’ White, watches over Hellsalem’s Lot as a tiny white butterfly…. Coincidence? I think not!
Background details: Yasuhiro Nightow’s name appears in the show as the name of one of the shops Leo passes by in downtown Hellsalem’s Lot.
Spirit Animal: Michella refers to Leo as her Tortoise Knight, at first this seems like an insult, since tortoises are slow, weak animals. But, Michella explains that because of their sizes and shape they are unable to move backward, like her brother… always moving forward.
This is the conclusion of the epic Kekkai Sensen series and absolutely nothing concerning Leo’s eye powers or his sister was resolved… yeah, we got a bit of background on the All Seeing Eyes of God last episode, but that was it. This episode was all about wrapping up Michella and Leo’s character arcs, without explaining anything! In fact, I think I have more questions now than I did when I started this series… But, despite all of this, I can’t really be mad about any of it, the final episode of Season 2 delivered everything I loved about the Kekkai Sensen series: epic anime battles, explosions, a phenomenal soundtrack, and stunning visuals. What more could I ask for?
If you are expecting a linear plot with a clear-cut resolution, this episode is going to piss you off big time… But, if like me you just like watching the world burn, then this is the episode for you! Everything has been leading up to this episode and whether you love it or hate it, THIS IS HOW THEY CHOSE TO END IT!
