Asta is now officially a Magic Knight! Last week, we met his fellow members in the Black Bulls, except for one who was shown only in the end! In this latest episode of Black Clover, we figure out just who she is and what her deal is! Aren’t you excited?
Japanese Original Episode Title: もう一人の新人団員
How would you react if you found out that your fellow newbie is a royal pain in the butt who looks down on you just for being a commoner? That’s what Asta faced the day after he officially entered the Black Bulls and met Noelle, the other new recruit! However, surely not a lot of people are mean for no reason, especially a girl who can’t even control her powers, right? So maybe it’s up to Asta and the other members to break through her tough shell!
Settling in:Leave it to Asta to appreciate having even the most rundown room as his own! I’m relieved that this boy is grateful for the little things, because he got used to having nothing! Meanwhile, the noble senpai, who definitely got everything he wanted in life, thought that a room belonging to their base is wasted on Yuno! Agh, don’t you just want to smack him in the head? Somehow, I found it amazing and sad at the same; Asta doesn’t have the fancy place to live in nor the notable reputation that Yuno has now, but Yuno doesn’t have the welcoming teammates and fun atmosphere that Asta has. Well, if we’re going to talk about how close the two are to becoming Wizard King, Yuno still definitely has the advantage, but it might be hard given that his peers might have crab mentality. If it were you, would you prefer to be in Asta’s position or Yuno’s?
News: I’ve been waiting for the time that the orphanage people will realize Asta can do more than what little they expected from him. Finally seeing their reactions made me so amused! I hope they learn not to jump to conclusions anymore and believe in their beloved Asta! What made me even happier was Nash brightening up when he heard the news! His older brother indeed proved to him that even people like them can achieve what others can!
Noelle Silva: Now I understand why Noelle was shrinking before her brother but was snobby while she was watching Asta and the others: she also discriminated based on status like the other nobles! Just what in the world is wrong with their country…? We also now know why it was already decided that she’ll be in the Black Bulls instead of the other noble squads! Indeed, in a world where magic is everything, she really would fit better with the outcasts because of her uncontrollable power. It’s just too bad that her family chose to ridicule her rather than help her out, even going as far as wishing she had died instead of their mother. It’s just too sad! I can somehow see where she got her bratty attitude from, especially if the only people around her were brats as well. At least, now she realized that the ‘peasants’ she’s with are far kinder to her than her actual family.
Uncontrollable power: You ever wanted to try something like dancing but your body just wouldn’t get the steps right? Or, do you have an illustration clear in your head but your hands just won’t draw properly? That must be how frustrating it is for Noelle! What’s more, she can’t even figure out a solution to be able to use her powers effectively! It was just so unpredictable that it even backfired on her! Good thing Asta and his nullifying magic were there to save the day! Maybe he can even be her training buddy, huh?
Themes & Trivia
Black sheep: A black sheep is someone who doesn’t fit in their family, quite like Noelle. You’ll find that most series have a black sheep, who sometimes becomes the fan favorite or welcomed by the protagonist’s group, much like Noelle! Can you note other characters like this?
Acceptance: Despite rightly gaining their captain’s offer to join the Golden Dawn, Yuno was still viewed as unfitting to join them. Even if she was part of the royal family, Noelle was treated as if she wasn’t one by her own flesh and blood because of her powers. At least now she experienced being accepted because of the Black Bulls, just like Asta did! If only Yuno could be accepted by his squad as well…
While this episode spoke to me emotionally because of Noelle’s flashbacks, somehowit was still a tad bland and stiff for me. It was an enjoyable episode but it wasn’t like the previous ones, full of action and excitement. And even if this is the bit of a breather we get, I think it could’ve been better. It’s nice that they gave details on what the Black Bulls HQ looks like, but I wish there was something else more interesting they could’ve put in the time spent there, probably to make Noelle’s introduction more amazing or something. I also feel like the animation quality is slowly going downhill…I hope that’s not the case.
Warm and accepted
I’m quite excited to see how Noelle will interact with the other members from now on! Will she easily get along with them? Or will she have to take it step by step? We’ll probably see it next week once the Black Bulls get a new mission, as shown in the preview!
