Did Black Clover manage to catch your attention last week with its premise? Well, be prepared for it to tug at your heartstrings this time! I was so full of feels by the end of it that I became grateful that the series seems to be concerned not only with the action but with the characters as well.
Japanese Original Episode Title: 少年の誓い
We finally saw just what that life-changing event the boys experienced in their childhood was, and what promise they made afterwards! Young Yuno, on his way from an errand, was suddenly confronted by a drunk man who wanted to steal his precious pendant! Fortunately, Asta came to save the day, a scene that had a great impact on his friend!
Childhood: I’m dead!! Yuno and Asta were so cute when they were younger!! Asta didn’t change much; he’s still super loud and gung-ho, and even at the age of 5, he was already asking Sister Lily to marry him! However, Yuno was way different back then! I can’t believe the aloof, serious, and snobbish guy we see now was quite the timid, soft-spoken crybaby before! So that’s what puberty and determination can do to a person! He’s still a soft boy inside, though. We could see just how much he looked up to Asta back then, and I’m so glad that even now that fact hasn’t changed (though it’s no longer that obvious). Most people would think that Asta’s just some guy trying hard to catch up to Yuno. I mean, that’s how it looked to us at first! But now we know thatAsta’sactually the reason why Yuno’sthe great prodigy that he is now. The boy was such an inspiration to him because he never got tired of backing him up and helping him out! Ahh, I love these two boys and their friendship so much!
Legend of the Wizard King: I bet most of us have been wondering just what that skull mountain-thing is supposed to be. Turns out, it’s the skull of a real demon! It would be quite hard to dismiss the legend of the wizard king with that huge evidence now, would it? Well, in a world full of magic, I guess not much is impossible, like killing a really huge monster. Another thing that got debunked was the fact that the Wizard King is actually different from their king! Did I understand that right? All this while I thought the Wizard King actually rules the Clover Kingdom! Though Sister Lily mentioned that the title gets passed down through generations and whoever has it acts as the protector of the kingdom, it really does sound like the Wizard King is more of a hero than an actual ruler, huh?
Incident:Where did Yuno’s pendant come from? It really does look valuable, even if you don’t take the drunk guy’s word for it. Could Yuno actually be connected to some powerful person? In any case, I was so worried that he would get picked on before he had a chance to deliver the letter! What a relief he managed to do his task well! However, it would’ve been better if he just didn’t get harmed at all! Way to go beating up and trying to steal from a child, drunk guy. It’s a good thing Asta really cared about his friend to go looking for him as soon as he noticed how late it was! He was also super brave! He had such a small body but such big determination! Even as a young child he had quite the endurance to stand his ground that long! No wonder Yuno changed after that! Seeing your friend get injured badly because of you, who was so afraid that couldn’t even do anything… you’d really want to repay the favor!
Victory and the Promise: Hah! Serves that creepy guy right for messing with these boys! I’m totally glad that Asta finally got his grimoire at that moment, since the look on Revchi’s face was priceless! He thought his magic was so awesome, but it only took one swing of Asta’s sword to render it useless and another to send him flying! I hope he gets taken into custody after that! Speaking of the sword, I got fooled again! I thought Asta’s magic was going to be related to combat, when actually that sword was just a medium for his nullifying magic! Maybe that’s why he didn’t have any obvious powers, huh? Kinda like how Sakura Mikan in Gakuen Alice was only able to find out she had powers when she hung out with other Alice users? That’s such a neat concept! On his own he’d really be powerless, but now he’d be able to protect and support people with this newfound power, especially Yuno! They say they’re competing to see who will become the next Wizard King and fulfill their promise, but I bet we’ll see even more instances where they’ll work together!
Themes & Trivia
Legends: These are stories, perceived as true, though there is little to no evidence proving their validity. They’re usually very old tales born from culture, religion, or rumors. You can learn a lot from them, such as important human values, or just neat info. Some notable legends include King Arthur, Robin Hood, Yamashita’s Treasures, and Bloody Mary.
Friendship: Friends bring out the best in you, just like Asta did with Yuno. They also believe in your capabilities, no matter what, like Yuno with Asta. Having wonderful friends is a great blessing, so remember to thank yours and make it a point to show them that you love them! You’re probably not in a friendly rivalry with them, though, so don’t imitate the present Yuno’s cold attitude towards his best bro!
I really loved this episode! Simple as it was, it focused mainly on the two protagonists’ dynamic, and made me super attached to them. Their relationship gave me another good reason to stick around with the show, aside from its interesting plot line! That animation was also crazy good, especially the part where Asta defeated Revchi! Epic!I’m so excited to see more!
May the best man win!
The preview made me anxious for next week’s episode! The two friends finally take their first steps on being the next Wizard King by enlisting in the Magic Knights! Just thinking about who they’ll meet, what they’ll learn, and what things they’ll experience is making me pumped up!
