Counterattack: Asta saving the day twice in a row? How awesome is that? (Well actually, it’s already thrice (?) with Lotus, but you get what I mean.) To be honest, isn’t it all because of Nero? That bird’s been helping our gang multiple times already! He showed Asta just the weapon he needed to face off against Mars! What a coincidence it was just behind him…though I guess that’s what Nero’s been trying to point to him even before Mars came to crash the party. Anyway, I’m just glad he now has a weapon that isn’t only light, enabling him to become more agile, but can also let him wield magic from his friends! It’s literally the power of friendship, isn’t it? I thought that Noelle’s encouragement would only give him a boost internally, but to think that it really gave him the power he needed! I’m so happy that his physical prowess and his friendships are being put to good use!
Themes & Trivia
Classical elements: Water, Earth, Fire, Air. Long ago, the four nations- whoops, wrong series. Kidding aside, whether it be in stories, games, superstitions, or many others, they all talk about four basic elements. This is because, in the past, they wanted to explain nature and its complexity in simpler substances. Some cultures add in a fifth element, which tends to vary.
Social Darwinism: Did you know that there was a theory popular in the late 19th – early 20th centuries based on the idea Mars kept repeating? It put ‘survival of the fittest’ into action by diminishing the weak and making the strong grow more powerful. This is probably why Anne Frank, one of the most discussed Jewish victims of the Holocaust, quoted in her book ‘The weak die out and the strong will survive, and will live on forever.’
What a way to stick to cliché but have your own go at it at the same time! Like I mentioned a few reviews before, anime series like banking on friends being the protagonist’s source of power. However, it’s awesome how this part of the story actually becomes true for Asta! I also have a feeling that Mars’ magic is a mix of his and his friend’s, especially since his grimoire looks like Frankenstein‘s monster with that red and white cover. This is only one of the reasons I’m totally appreciating the writing in this arc more and more!
However, while I did get a kick out of everything in this episode, the cherry on top was definitely the Petit Clover segment! I just love how they poked fun at the super-duper scary person who’s supposed to be killing them all! The previous weeks’ bonuses have all been so entertaining that I can’t resist showing my appreciation for this segment anymore!
My friends are my power!
Even though Asta getting injured shocked me, somehow I’m not worried too much. I mean, he got stabbed by an even bigger and stronger projectile before, and still somehow managed to survive and fight back! Plus, Mimosa the healer is there…I’m sure he’ll be fine!
