Black Clover‘s episode this week featured the conclusion to the attack on Seyhe Village! It was just so thrilling to see how the Black Bulls trio pulled off the fight, despite being at a disadvantage! Our rooting for the underdogs continues!
Japanese Original Episode Title: 護る者
Noelle saved the townsfolk from getting skewered by icicles when her grimoire developed a protective spell for her to use! That sounds great, but the enemies were still standing, and they were still out to kill them all! Magna was already running out of fuel so he couldn’t do much, but there’s Asta, the boy who doesn’t know how to give up! Was he enough to get the job done and show those condescending jerks that even commoners can beat their sorry butts in order?
Retaliation: I can’t help but be proud of Asta, Magna, and especially Noelle! Not only did they not run away from their foes, standing their ground to protect the villagers even if it would kill them, but they even managed to defeat their opponents! Sure it was by the skin of their teeth, but that’s exactly what’s so surprising about it! Noelle only lucked out from getting a new spell, while Asta and Magna were already at their limit! Our protagonist was especially amazing; he never let anything stop him, even if it was multiple stabs to the gut! (Come to think of it, why did he not get badly injured by those icicles? Were they just blunt ones? Hmm…) No wonder the high and mighty Noelle became impressed with him! I was also really delighted when the senpai-kouhai duo used the initiation to catch them off-guard, and when the princess followed up with another water barrier to protect Magna! Her tsundereremark was an added treat too! What a great team these three make! They give the Black Bulls a good name!
Aftermath: Darn it. It would’ve been a perfect foiling of a plot if one of the hooded guys didn’t get to escape and if Heath and the rest of his lackeys didn’t commit suicide. Somehow, I can’t blame Magna and the others for not foreseeing it, though and for not preventing it. Maybe something like this has never happened before? At least it’ll teach them to be more vigilant if something similar ever arises again. Well anyway, I guess the most important thing was that they saved the villagers and unknowingly protected the magic stone!
Remembering Seyhe: Too bad about Mayor Seyhe! Seeing Magna defeat those thugs, seeing him in action as a Magic Knight, what a wonderful thing to see for the man who became like a father to him! However, he died for the greater good, protecting his people! He may not have achieved his dream of being a Magic Knight, but he sure as heck fulfilled a duty like one! As a side note, the anti-bird found the magic stone, which Nick said was Seyhe’s charm. Why did he have it? And…
The mastermind? Who in the world is the mastermind behind the attack? What is he trying to achieve? He even had a lot more stones like that one on that stone slab and said something about resurrecting their master. Just who is this master? And why in the world would someone from the Golden Dawn, the most powerful squad, be plotting something like that? Whoever that guy is, I hope Asta and the others get their revenge on him soon, for Seyhe’s sake!
Themes & Trivia
Surpassing limits:There’s a reason why there’s suffering in hard work! We need to go beyond our capabilities to grow, even if we already want to give up! That’s exactly what the trio did! Noelle resolved to keep fighting even if she couldn’t do anything, Magna still kept thinking of a way to defeat their opponents though he was already drained, and Asta kept on standing to attack though he kept getting injured! We saw that all of their hard work bore fruit, right? So even Nick, who wanted to be a Magic Knight despite knowing his limitations, for sure he’ll achieve his goal if he does his very best!
Elemental rock-paper-scissors: Anyone who’s ever played Pokemon knows that each element has advantages and disadvantages over the others! Well, even if you haven’t or not have heard about the concept from other media, you probably realized it if you saw ice melting from the heat, right?
Better to die than be killed: Being a goon is tougher than it looks, since if you fail your mission, you’re expected to escape flawlessly, or die instead! Maybe that’s why assassins in some series tend to carry poison on them, so they can easily dodge interrogation!
I would point out the drawing quality again, but you already hear that from me a lot, don’t you? At least the fighting scenes were good! Hopefully, they get the hang of it more so they can further the excitement level in the next ones, possibly with consistent and better art. Overall, especially events and theme-wise, this was a nice episode! I do feel like it could be improved even more in a lot of areas, but let’s just leave it at that and keep on wishing for improvement every week.
The start of something big
I’m looking forward to seeing Yami’s response to the trio’s report once they get back! Actually, I’d like to see what else is going to happen in the next episode, cause that’s all I got from the preview, aside from Asta getting shoved off a broom again!
