BEM Episode 2 Review: Liar

So the villain of this episode was Bowling Elvis wannabe? The story and the plot got much more interesting this week, but boy oh boy wasn’t that character completely out of place.

Plot

Sonia and the police discover a body in the graveyard that seems to have died years ago and begin further investigations on the victim. Bella or Annie or Annabella is attending a prestigious high school in Upper where she enjoys her ‘teenage’ lifestyle with her friends. One day when she was out at a mall, one woman named Elaine recognized her while calling her Mary and claimed that she looks exactly the same as one of her old high school classmates. As it turns out to be, Bela has taken the form of Mary when she passed away, but it seems that Mary was involved in a terrible accident conjured up by Elaine which made her lose her life. Although Elaine tries to get rid of her, Bela finds out the truth and confronts her while turning into a monster. Bem comes into the scene and manages to hold Bela off before she kills Elaine.

Episode Highlights

Anabella the posh girl: Her story was much smoother compared to what we saw in the first episode. She was introduced properly and through her story we got to learn a few more things about our main characters. First of all, all three of them have ‘taken’ their looks from actual humans that have also probably been dead for quite a while. The other thing that we learned was the fact that they cannot taste human food. I didn’t notice if they said that it tastes like nothing to them or just really bad. And the other thing was the fact that they have different transformation stages and when they reach the second one they lose control of their ‘humanity’ or whatever you want to call it. But the most important out of them all is the fact that Bela has a fanboy that draws her in ‘secret’ during classes and that the whole thing about Mary and her story made her realize that she shouldn’t be a bitch to him. I am delightfully pleased with how things have turned out.

Cyborg Bowling Elvis: Besides the fact that he didn’t fit in the whole story even one bit, that guy is certainly a mess for a villain. I mean he looks like something in between Franky from One Piece and someone that plays bowling while he is dressed like Elvis. And his evil powers were bowling people to death. I mean I get it that he must be a character from the previous seasons of the show or something, but the way they decided to present him to the story was actually terrible.

Belo is my favorite: He seems like a geeky smart ass with the whole Proxy Wars and eavesdropping to Elaine and Bela’s conversation. His face and reaction killed me when Bela broke his phone after seeing Elaine’s photo of talking to the guys that were trying to hit on her.

The opening of this series is really growing on me. I love the jazzy feel that it has! Although the opening sequence is beautifully directed, I can’t say the same for the rest of the episodes. The scene where Elaine is looking out the window and then Bela suddenly shows up against her was so bad that It actually made me laugh out loud. In one split second, with no sound or reaction whatsoever the background goes black and then BOOM! Bela is there half naked on her couch and Elaine was super casual and cool about; she only started screaming when she became a monster. That scene was executed so badly that it was kind of hilarious to witness.

You can draw me from the front next time.

It seems like the show will follow this kind of episodic one-villain-at-a-time format while giving every now and then a little backstory for the main characters. That probably means that in the next episode we will get to learn a little bit more about Belo. Bem is definitely going to be kept mysterious for a while.
