You know that things get serious in Attack on Titan when they omit the opening. That deadly silence during the dialogues made this the most haunting scene we have witnessed so far. This was the most heart wrenching episode of the whole series.
Japanese Original Episode Title: 白夜
Eren is approached by the Beast Titan and his Titan ride as they try to save Bertholdt but Levi is still following them which makes them flee empty-handed. As he requests Eren’s gas in order to keep hunting them down, they realize that Armin is still breathing and prepare the injection for him in order to eat Bertholdt, take his powers, and survive. Meanwhile, Hange is getting ready to kill Reiner, after getting a metal box out of his pocket that contains a letter from Ymir to Christa. He refuses to cooperate with them but before doing so Jean suggests that they find Captain Levi and take advantage of Reiner’s powers by using the injection. Hange sends Mikasa to Eren and Armin’s location to see if she can get the injection, but as instructed, she fires red smoke that indicates that the injection cannot be used. At that point the Beast Titan comes and takes Reiner away following with their quick escape. Floch brings back Commander Erwin fatally wounded but still alive from the battlefield, which puts Levi into a great dilemma as to who is he going to bring back to life. After dealing with everyone’s emotions, Levi makes his decision and injects Armin allowing him to eat Bertholdt, acquiring his Colossal Titan powers and returning him to life.
RIP Captain Erwin: I shed a lot of tears in this episode because I knew that despite the outcome an amazing character is going to pass away. Erwin was one of my favorites in this show. I also kind of expected Levi to choose Armin because Erwin has had an amazing farewell scene two episodes ago along with an incredible speech as his last words. But what really ruined me was Levi’s words, ‘It’s time for us to let him rest now.’ Levi’s choice was not unbiased and completely devoid of emotions. He didn’t just make the ‘best’ choice for the sake of humanity, he deeply cared about Erwin as a human and more importantly as a friend. He realized that bringing him back to life would be a very cruel thing to do to him. Erwin was a broken man that was lying to himself in order to carry on and justify that pile of corpses that he has left behind. Surely he had a dream to reach that basement and redeem his father but forcing him to get back to being this ‘devil’ that would save humanity would have been more of a sentence than a blessing and would ultimately put his sacrifice in vain. Erwin you have been the most badass and competent commander that ever existed. You deserve everyone’s respect. Susume!
Armin is the Colossal Titan: I would have never guessed that Armin would ever become a Titan in this show, but there we have it. I think that Levi took the right decision here and chose Armin because honestly he is young, ambitious, and really thinks alike Erwin in so many ways. Having him as a strategist for the Scouts as well as the second Titan shifter on their side would definitely ‘help humanity survive’.
Beast Titan get out of here: He has almost been slaughtered by Levi but he still goes around with that horrible Titan that runs like crazy, trying to save the other two. What really upset me in this scene was the fact that he tried to sympathize with Eren by saying, ‘We are both victims of your father. You have been brainwashed by him’. He also added that he will be coming back to ‘save’ him. I am so scared by the idea of our guys being the bad ones in this and I don’t like it at all. Isayama don’t do this to us, please.

Injection conditions: Not only can Titan powers and much-needed information be stolen by using the injection, but it also allows the revival of someone who is critically wounded. The ideal candidate would be someone near death that is already close to an incapacitated enemy with Titan powers.
Even though I wanted Reiner and Bertholdt to die, I felt horrible looking at them in that condition. Just imagine how horrible it must feel for the rest of the Scouts to see them like this and having to kill them. Honestly, this episode destroyed my heart in so many ways.
Everyone was a slave to something.
It’s happening guys, next episode they are finally going to the renowned basement. I am not sure if I want to know the horrors that await in there…
