Craving for more nightmare fuel? Attack on Titan is here once again to satisfy your needs. Rod Reiss’ Titan face will haunt you forever, along with that beautiful scene of him on the Wall.
Japanese Original Episode Title: 壁の王
Erwin justifies his decision of not evacuating the citizens of Orvud District in order to draw the abnormal Rod Reiss’ Titan into a trap. When the dawn arrives, the battle begins with the Wall troops firing cannons to the Titan which have little effect. When the Titan eventually reaches the Wall, its face and chest are worn off from crawling across the ground. Eren then transforms into his Titan form and plunges barrels of gunpowder into the Titan’s throat which detonate from its overwhelming heat and blow him into pieces. The Scouts then start destroying the remaining pieces with Historia finishing off the weak spot at the nape of its neck. She is then thrown into the city, discovered by the citizens around and as she recovers, she declares that she is Historia Reiss, the true ruler of the walls. Back at the Reiss estate, Kenny is badly injured and recalls events from his past. He is later found by Levi who notices that Kenny has a syringe of Titan serum by his side.
Humans are energy, not just food: According to Hange and Erwin, Abnormal Titans are drowned to large crowds of people and that was the reasoning behind Erwin’s decision of not evacuating the Orvud District. But what is more interesting is the scene before the opening where we see everything from the Titan’s point of view and it is presented that humans look like some sort of energy force. This is definitely an important detail.
The face reveal: I did not expect that at all. Seeing his face and front side completely worn off and thinking that he was destroying his skin as he was crawling makes me really uncomfortable. On top of that, seeing his intestines dripping on the Wall was really unexpected. Can you even imagine seeing that thing live? Huge, smoking hot and spewing guts and blood everywhere. Traumatized for life.
Eren, you should be more careful: Even though Attack on Titan is dark and horrifying, I love how they still find time to include some quality humor. In the scene when he was trying to make Rod Reiss’ Titan stop, Eren says: ‘Tiny old man’ and then realizes that Levi is behind him, which gives him cold sweat. Just brilliant.
Historia Reiss, the true ruler of the walls: That girl is becoming so badass. Her character development is surprisingly good. She even stands up for herself in front of Erwin and speaks her mind. She wanted to be in the front lines in order to make people trust her and see her as a worthy heir to the throne or whatever and that’s why she wanted to be the one to kill her father. Despite all that though she got flashbacks with memories of her family which I think that is once again another important point for the story.
Themes & Trivia
Orvud District: After seeing Erwin mentioning the lack of battle experience the troops have in the North, I thought it was a good idea to check the map of the Attack on Titan world to better understand the situation. It’s really unsettling to see how small the Human territory has become compared to the Titan one, along with the fact that if Wall Rose were to fall, humanity is so screwed.
Information Available for Public Disclosure
Rod Reiss’ Titan: The transfigured form of Rod Reiss resulting from the transformation serum. Its size exceeds even the Colossal Titan and it possesses a similar ability to emit scalding steam. Due to its body and weight, it’s unable to walk and must crawl across the ground.
Can we take a minute to appreciate Erwin’s drawing skills? Thank you.
Is Eren finally going to stop being a crybaby? I just can’t stand seeing him as another typical and dumb shonen protagonist so please Eren get your shit together. If this episode was some sort of revelation to him, I really want to see some changes in his character from now on. He is the only one that has not grown from his experiences so far.
The weak one was me.
In the next episode, we will get to know more about Kenny and his mysterious friend along with how he met Levi and their past together. Will he actually turn into a Titan or will Levi kill him before he gets to do so?
