After this episode of Attack on Titan, there is no doubt that a war is coming within the Walls. The uprising is near and I just hope that Erwin will survive long enough to see his plan in action.
Japanese Original Episode Title: 信頼
The Scouts manage to capture Marlo and Hitch, two members of the Military Police that used to be in the same team of Stohess District Privates as Annie. Meanwhile, at Capital Mitras, Hange rescues Flegel, the son of Boss Reeves, who is hunted down by the Interior Police. Back in the woods, Hitch is accusing the scouts of bringing death into the city in order to capture the Titan and how it’s their fault that Annie is still missing. Captain Levi then reveals to them that Annie is the Titan and that they just want to help humanity survive by unravelling the secrets hidden by the government. Marlo offers to join them and after being tested by Jean, they prove to the Scouts that they genuinely want to support them. They attack one of the weaker posts of the Military Police outside the city, Levi captures their leader and tries to extract information out of him. Back in the city, Flegel works with Hange and pretends to be captured by the Military Police but before they kill him, he makes them admit being involved in his father’s death, which is overheard by Hange and the nearby civilians and Flegel swears to defend them against the Interior Police. In the meantime, Erwin is brought before the King in preparation for his execution.
Armin’s character development: It is amazing how this cute little guy has evolved into a beast. I have recently re-watched the whole series and it really amazed me how much he has changed from the first episode. Especially if you compare him with Eren, Armin has become quite an interesting and fascinating character. And might I just add that he is starting to become a bit dark and creepy? Look at this face… Reminded me of when he was lying to Bertholdt about Annie’s whereabouts.
Is everyone an Ackerman now? In the second season, everyone turned out to be a Titan and in this season everyone is going to turn out to be an Ackerman? What the hell is going on? Mikasa was caught way off guard when Levi mentioned Kenny’s last name. Are Levi and Mikasa related? And if they are, is Kenny related to them as well? Or did Kenny just gave his last name to Levi because he was under his protection? I think they are definitely related. It can’t be a coincidence that all of them are insanely strong.
Hange and Erwin are so badass: You would think that she would have lost her hearing after that guy shot next to her ear but noooo… she just carried on and punched him straight in the face. Erwin did well to leave her in command of the Scouts, she is going to do a great job. And can we just take a minute to appreciate how awesome Erwin is? He has no hand, he has been beaten up and captured but he can still confidently look at you straight in the eyes, threaten you, and convince you that he had the upper hand all along. He is THE MAN.
Levi can make you hurt: Seeing him pushing his foot down that man’s throat made me remember the scene of him beating up Eren in the first season. He is absolutely crazy and he knows it.
– You are insane!
– Maybe I am.
Themes & Trivia
Chancellery: I think the guys that were plotting to kill Erwin are the Lords that are members of the Chancellery, which is an institution that unifies and supervises the various public organizations of administration, justice, and military which act under the royal government’s will. Although it officially outranks other organizations, its authority is in constant contention.
It is always interesting to see Hange’s schemes and her way of thinking. I honestly believe that the Scouts have some brilliant minds. I mean they have Erwin who is very strategic, methodical and logical; then you have Armin who is very observative, rational, and can absorb and use information to his advantage; and then you Hange who is a chaotic genius with no sense of danger. These three make an absolute killer team in terms of strategy and plans, and along with the fighting skills of Levi and Mikasa and Eren’s Titan form, they could literally bring the whole world upside down, but as Hange mentioned in the episode, the Scouts haven’t been so lucky thus far. Probably because their enemy is not who they were expecting.
Defeat is all the Scout Regiment has ever known.
I have to say the characters in Attack on Titan are so great and unique that is kind of hard to pick up favorites. And what is really fascinating is their development in general. Good job, Isayama. Also, please Mr. Isayama, don’t kill Erwin, he is way too precious to die. Thank you.
