Well, that escalated quickly. Such a great first episode to really start kicking things off. Conspiracies that begin to get deeper, more death and mayhem, and Attack on Titan even has flying cowboys now. Can this anime get any better?
Japanese Original Episode Title: 狼煙
Mikasa, Armin, and the rest have become members of Levi’s Squad in order to guard and protect Eren and Historia. Hange starts to experiment with Eren, but unfortunately, he is not able to transform properly into a Titan, making the whole operation of sealing the Wall in Shiganshina District stay behind. As Hange goes back to Trost, she finds out that Pastor Nick is dead and that he was in fact murdered by the First Interior Squad of the Military Police. She reports this to Captain Levi and they come to understand that the government is doing shady stuff and wants to capture Eren and Historia. Erwin sends a message to Levi with Nifa to quickly abandon their base and relocate as the Military police come after them. After doing so, Hange and Moblit are going after Erwin and Levi and the rest are headed back to Trost to meet up with Commander Pyxis. Armin is disguised as Historia and Jean as Eren in order to fool the enemy and they are soon kidnapped by some amateur gang that raises Levi’s suspicions that the government is not behind this specific attack. As he goes back to guard the wagon where the real Historia and Eren are located, he is attacked by Kenny the Ripper, an old acquaintance of his.
Hange is seriously the best: She is honestly so crazy and badass that I can’t handle it. Undoubtedly, one of the most valuable characters because thanks to her, they have realized so many things about the Titans, and in general, she is just awesome. I loved the scene when she was threatening Djel Sannes, acting all wacko while rubbing his hands.
Captain Levi is back: Finally! After almost not seeing him at all in the second season, we get to see some of his badass-ery once again. And from the look of things, we will get to see him a lot in the next few episodes. I am very intrigued to learn more about his relationship with Kenny the Ripper.
Nifa: The moment you start saying to yourself that a character looks cool, she is gone in the next second. That’s Attack on Titan right there. She kind of reminded me of Petra a little bit and seeing how she died, well, she definitely reminds me of Petra now…
Themes & Trivia
The opening: This season’s opening theme is quite different from the ones we were used to so far. It’s more slow and mellow and it’s composed by YOSHIKI from X JAPAN. It’s actually a collaboration of X JAPAN and HYDE (L’Arc-en-Ciel) who are honestly legends in the Japanese rock and metal scene. Not only that, they are credited and considered to be the pioneers of visual kei and J-rock in general. If you have no idea what I am talking about visual kei is a movement among Japanese musicians that is characterized by the use of varying levels of makeup, elaborate hairstyles, and flamboyant costumes, often, but not always, coupled with androgynous aesthetics, similar to Western glam rock.
First of all, I have to say that Eren didn’t scream or raged even once in this episode which was so god-damn refreshing to see. He also looks more mature, like the shape of his face and his whole built looks different to me. I kind of got the same feels like when I saw Harry Potter growing up throughout the movies and seeing Daniel Radcliffe’s head become more and more square.
‘Also, Eren’s ass is hanging out.’ Oh, Levi. You and your smart remarks. Is it me or does he look more pissed and grumpy than ever before? Even though we know about his whole backstory from the Attack on Titan: No Regrets OVA, there was no mention of Kenny the Ripper there, so the next few episodes will be very interesting to see. Plus Kenny looks very badass as well with the whole pistols situation, so the fight between those two will definitely be epic.
Their eyes are fixed on us
Something is telling me that in this season we will finally learn some key plot elements or at least I hope so because I was honestly on edge throughout the whole episode. Attack on Titan doesn’t disappoint and I am so glad to be experiencing once again this thrill and feeling of impatience to see what is about to follow.
