We got a lot of vague information in Episode 35 of Attack on Titan. Slow paced again, I would say, and nothing really ‘wow’ happened but anyway at least we learned something! Ymir’s backstory shed some light but we still have no clue as to what is really happening.
Japanese Original Episode Title: Kodomodachi (子供達)
The episode starts in Connie’s village where we see Hange’s team going to investigate the attack of the Titans there and how the villagers managed to escape without taking the horses and with no bloodshed whatsoever. When they manage to go to the crippled Titan’s location, Moblit is handed a picture of Connie’s family and realizes that that Titan actually looks like Connie’s mother.
Meanwhile, Reiner tries to convince Ymir to join them, but she only agrees to do so if they take Christa with them before they run away from the Scouts. While they are trying to flee from the forest of the Giant Trees, we see a flashback about Ymir’s childhood where as a kid she was taken to be worshiped by a cult who thought that she had royal blood. She made herself live this lie for a while until the cult was discovered by soldiers. She and the cultists are taken to be punished by being thrown off a Wall which results to them shifting into Titans. Ymir then spend 60 years wandering outside the Walls as a Titan until she ‘stumbled’ upon Reiner, Bertholdt, Annie, and Marcel. Marcel saves Reiner and ends up being devoured by Ymir when suddenly after that she regains her human form.
In the present, she convinces Reiner and Bertholdt to take Christa with them and she shifts into a Titan since she can move faster and act as a diversion for them to get a head on. When Mikasa, Armin and everyone else enter the forest, they find Ymir in Titan form. She is not attacking them but just looking at them, until Christa comes into the battle front where Ymir jumps on her and ‘eats her.’ She then re-joins Reiner and Bertholdt at the edge of the forest where Reiner shifts into the Armored Titan and starts running away with Bertholdt, Eren, and Titan Ymir on his shoulders, while Hannes and the Scouts keep following them on horses.
Unnecessary love story: So apparently we have a love story between Bertholdt and Annie. I don’t know about you guys but I didn’t expect that at all. Also, I thought it was completely random and unnecessary but anyways I am just going to say that it can be cute.
Actual cute love story: In this episode, you could really feel Ymir’s feelings for Christa which for me, made it really cute and touching compared to that half-assed ‘I want to marry her’ feelings that Reiner has for her.
Facts about Titan Shifters: We are reassured in this episode (since it has been hinted before with Eren) that when someone is transformed into a Titan they don’t remember anything, which makes me wonder how they remember that they can shift into Titans in the first place but anyways.
Ymir is an old lady: Ymir is more than 60 years old… Girl, you need to tell me all about your beauty routine because DAMN!!!
Themes & Trivia
Captain Levi inspiration: So, since the show is not giving him any screen time, I will share some fun facts about him. Levi is named after a character in the American documentary Jesus Camp, since Isayama thought that it was a good name. Also, according to one of Isayama’s interviews, Levi’s design and personality is based on Rorschach, a character from the American comic Watchmen. The moment he doodled him he realized that he was onto something big and that this character will be liked a lot, especially by the female fandom.
You know, those fans might be disappointed to hear this, but maybe I’ve got a little bit of yaoi fangirl inside me too, because something went off in my head that told me, ‘The yaoi fangirls are going to like this one’ -Isayama
Alright, I have to comment once again on the remarkable artwork that they have in this anime. When Eren is taunting Reiner and playing all innocent and when Ymir is having her revelation moment and looks up the sky both of them look wonderful, really loved the details.
About Ymir, I think we were given the impression that she is kind of a special case compared to the other Titans, or maybe I am wrong, I don’t know. I am very curious to learn more about the ‘blood of the king’ because I thought that they were using something like that in some kind of ritual to kids that they think that can react to it well and be able to become Titans but the scene where they throw the cultists off the Wall and they shift into Titans confused me quite a bit. Becoming a Titan was some sort of punishment for people that worshiped chosen ones apart from the royal family? That’s why probably Christa plays such an important role as an illegitimate child. Maybe she has the ‘royal blood’ that they want? But why do they need Eren then? Did his father injected him ‘royal blood’ and that’s why he is considered the special one? I have no clue.
And one more thing. If we judge by Ymir, do they need to eat someone or just get pulled out of their Titan form in order to gain back their consciousness? I mean the Titan Shifters, because come on, the other random Titans eat nonstop without any effect on them.
Also, I am curious to know the reason Ymir joined the Scouts. Was it part of her whole revelation moment or she just wanted to learn more about Titans? Ugh, so many questions!! AND, one last thing. I have to comment about the cheesy background song when Ymir was having her moment. ‘You will know you are reborn toniiight.’ This had me giggling a little bit.
Where the hell is Levi?
I don’t know about you guys but for me if this season ends with no Levi action I will be very mad. I want to see him fighting the Colossal or the Armored, even if he is injured. Or even better, I want to see Levi and Mikasa fighting them. Oh yesss! Let’s hope for an intense fight in the next one so they can balance the pace a little bit more! Cheers!
