Episode 34 of Attack on Titan was an insanely long conversation with quite a lot of hints but with no actual information as to what the hell is happening. I am not that worried though because I expect by the end of this season something really juicy to come up.
Japanese Original Episode Title: 開口
Captain Erwin is leading the rescue expedition to go save Eren and Ymir and kick Reiner’s and Bertholdt’s butts. Hange, exhausted and badly injured, demands a horse to go capture and investigate the crippled Titan from Connie’s village. Her assistant refuses to let her go in her situation and goes in her stead (let’s hope he won’t fuck up).
Meanwhile, in the forest with the Giant Trees where the scouts are headed, we see Eren realizing that he has no hands and trying to shift into his Titan form but he is stopped by Ymir. She then starts explaining to him that in their current situation: surrounded by Titans, still regenerating their bodies and with no Maneuver Gear, it will be foolish trying to escape. Afterwards, she tries to get information from Reiner as to where they are going and why they are waiting in the forest. Reiner says that they will take them to their hometown and are waiting for nightfall when the Titans of the area will be unable to move.
We then see Reiner starting to ramble about his duties: how well they did the last few days and how they should get promoted from being soldiers. Ymir then realizes that he is lost between his human soldier and Titan warrior persona and tries to pry on him. Reiner’s reaction infuriates Eren who starts confronting him and Bertholdt, telling them that they are mass killing murderers and blaming them for all the destruction and chaos they have caused to the human kind.
Ymir, or better ‘the voice of logic,’ ignores Eren’s childish reactions to the situation and starts questioning Reiner about the creepy monkey Titan who basically was the cause for all the recent shenanigans and asks him who is the real enemy. Reiner in order to avoid giving more information uses Ymir’s concern for Christa’s safety as leverage and tries to make her understand that they are fighting for the same purpose. The conversation is interrupted by the Scout’s flare guns who are getting closer to the forest.
I love Hange: Hange is one of my favorites in the show. I love how even when shit hits the fan she is focused and finds the next steps to follow super quick. I put all my hopes on her with the crippled Titan and I hope that she will reassure my suspicions.
I have a hunch that we need to investigate – Hange
Oh yes you do indeed!
The just-chilling Titan: Undoubtedly the Abnormal that is staring at them while lying down at the bottom of the tree was the highlight of this episode.
Reiner has lost it: Reiner is losing his sanity because he is contradicting his personality with the things that he does. His reactions lately have been so weird that I haven’t even bothered talking about him, but with the information that he convinced himself that he is a soldier we can make some sense out of all this.
Themes & Trivia
Ymir is Hatsune Miku: I was browsing on the internetz the other day and I realized that Ymir’s voice actress Saki Fujita is in fact the same voice actress of Hatsune Miku of Vocaloid. Well… personally I would have never seen that coming!
I am trying to be very objective but this episode let me down quite a bit. The only things that we got out of this was that they can’t really shift into Titans while they are regenerating their bodies and that the creepy monkey is the real threat to all (well no shit, like we didn’t know… that thing only by the looks of it gives me the chills).
I was hoping for a fight (a verbal one) between Ymir and Reiner about their childhood story (Titan form of Ymir eating their friend) just so we can understand Ymir’s background a little bit more because for now she is a complete outsider to me and I can’t understand what her real purpose is in this.
Still waiting for the epic Battle in the Forest
Let’s see how the battle is going to take place in the forest and I am intrigued to see the plan that Ymir has to offer reflecting on her own past and emotions. Just give us something good to talk about, that’s all I am asking! Cheers!
