As Miss Beelzebub Likes is a cute and sweet anime series, It aired during Fall 2018, starting on 11 October 2018 and I was lucky to review it for our weekly anime reviews. Even though I had my issues with it, I can say that it is a great series. My issues had to do with the story, as I don’t always like how Japanese animation handles the romance genre. The characters were the main reason I loved this series more than others; they all have their crazy sides but – for demons living in hell – they are all so loveable… I want to squish them all in a big group hug. Except for Eurynome.
Check out the series review below for all my thoughts on this cute little story.
Mullin works for Her Highness, Lady Beelzebub, and is something you could call her secretary. Their working place is Hell, so Lady Beelzebub has to be fierce and strong at all times. Mullin is surprised when he finds out that his boss is obsessed with all things fluffy and sweet. Her room is full of fluffy little creatures called Gossamer and she loves to eat sweets. Knowing a big secret like that, he sometimes has to work extra hard to keep it hidden and other times gets to see Beelzebub in a different light than anybody else. Together with their friends Azazel, Gocchin, Dantalion, Molech, Sargatana, Astaroth, and many more, they live through their everyday life in Hell as they give their best at work and slowly get to know each other…
Every story lives through its characters. We follow these denizens of Hell through their slice-of-life work and personal days. All of these characters can be described as cute. Beelzebub is sexy-cute, Mullin is smart-cute, Gocchin is innocent-cute, Sargatanas is tsundere-cute, Astaroth is flirty-cute, Molech is stupid-cute, Azazel is masculine-cute, Dantalion is sleepy-cute and… I won’t even talk about Eurynome and I will pretend that she isn’t there. Yes, I hated her character that much. She’s a pedophile and not cute at all.
What makes this series so enjoyable is that the characters know each other really well and interact accordingly. Coming into the series I felt like I am a part of the group. I was there with them, working with them, fooling around with them. At the same time, the plot sometimes got confusing because apparently Beelzebub and Astaroth know each other for hundreds of years and for that… well let’s just say it does seem like they didn’t know each other well enough… I think a background story could have helped, especially when it came to those two. Well, nothing’s perfect. It still was all right because they were… cute!
I love this story because I am head over heels in love with the characters (I wish they had more merchandise). However, I can see how this is far from a perfect anime and the main reason is that I am getting really tired of nobody ending up together properly in most of the anime series. Sure, there are some series where they do, but never in this cutesy kind of genre. I would have wanted to see Mullin be able to take Beelzebub in his arms. Like during that one time when Beelzebub is really, really scared, Mullin could have hugged her! Or her being all red after he steals a kiss or she steals a kiss. Not just gets close to stealing a kiss. Come on, producers, I’m here telling you I would settle for a hug between the main couple! That’s how desperate I am! Give cutesy anime some love scenes, too! We want them and they wouldn’t destroy anything of the soothing they give! It was especially frustrating because there were three couples here who were not really getting anywhere and we were left hanging. The same goes for the ending which was very cute and beautiful but still so frustrating because they just didn’t show… anything.
This is another cute anime story. Warmly recommended for the characters, especially if you think the word ‘cute’ fits the things you usually like. There is nothing wrong with the series, just don’t expect too much after the first episode has a rocket-start in that department… It definitely was one of the better series I have watched in the last year, so I hope fans of cutesy romance series would give it a try, anyway. More fans could mean a second season with more cuteness, softness, and sweetness, and I would be up for that.
