Episode 6 of As Miss Beelzebub Likes already marks the halftime of the show and it does seem like they have to catch their breath for a bit before giving us more impactful parts of the story. At this point, Mullin is still somewhat caught between being a mother hen and admiring his boss without admitting to himself that he has feelings for her. On the other hand, Beelzebub is trying to put a name to her feelings, but at least she openly thinks that she wants to be close to him and shows how comfortable she is with him. Now that we got that re-confirmed, let’s take a look at how this week’s episode was!
Japanese Titlte: 9センチ分の。/ 閣下の秘密。(9-Senchi-bun. / Kakka no himitsu.)
The first half of the story works around how Beelzebub ruins her shoes and breaks her heel by getting stuck somewhere. To the rescue comes not Mullin but the demon Adrammelch–or ‘Lady Ad’ (Japanese Original: Ad-nee, which literally translates to (older) sister Ad).
The second part of the episode we get to know what Beelzebub is scared of: lightning. Because God did send lightning to throw her out of heaven, she is scared of them now. Just when Mullin thought that Beelzebub was amazing for not having anything she didn’t like, a thunderstorm came up. Mullin was able to shine bright as the savior and hero.
This episode does definitely not shine with a lot of development or with character growth or something like that. Looking at just the synopsis I would even dare to say it looks boring. But the symbolism and slow blooming of feelings is just the right thing to watch when you come home from a long day at work. This is nothing heavy, but so cute and sweet. We are talking about a shoe breaking. Any badass demon lady probably would have taken off her shoes and went on with her day barefoot. For our precious Beelzebub it was the end of the world because it is strange to walk around without shoes or broken shoes and she can’t look strange to other people. She’s freaking Beelzebub!! Of course, Mullin understands her but he is too awkward to simply do something about it. While he (and me, to be honest…) didn’t think it was that big of a deal, for her it was the biggest deal ever–because she was so far away from Mullin. Precious little Beelzebub. I love how that shows her feelings, how much she wants to be close to him, even if it is just 9 centimeters closer…
Also, at the beginning, the lady narrator said something very important. Beelzebub felt stronger and more confident with her shoes. I can tell you, shoes really can do magic when you go out. They do make you feel better–if you wear the right ones. So I love that Beelzebub gets to be badass (most of the time) and wear heels that make her feel good! No questions asked! Her Highness can wear whatever she wants!
Anybody else thought it was adorable that Mullin liked her without the 9 cm heel as well? Because I thought it was super adorable, how he looked down at her and was all red and happy. Maybe that let him see her a bit more like a woman instead of his boss? It could help in the future!
There we got the person in charge for Beelzebubs bad outfit! Please don’t show off her boobs so much next time, because then Mullin might be able to actually carry her into her office without feeling embarrassed!
Do I have to say anything? How cute Beelzebub looked when she was scared in that garden and looking at Mullin? It might have been over the top, but at the same time I thought it makes a great wallpaper. Beautiful picture.
Since I share the love of chestnuts with Beelzebub, I can only say that I loved the beginning and ending of the episode. I would love to collect some chestnuts together with Beelzebub. And we can also eat all the chestnut-themed desserts there are. I haven’t eaten a single one that didn’t taste good so far!
What to say but that this character fits the description about the demon I found online! It’s the one that is supposed to make clothes for Satan. The way he is displayed is often with a human body but with parts of a donkey, mostly the head, and sometimes even with the beautiful feathers of a male peacock. I’d say that’s as classy as we have seen Adrammelch in this series as well.
Concerning his character, I’d say he doesn’t seem all too important but like a fun little insert from time to time. Nothing much to dislike there, I definitely enjoy him a lot more than the shotacon-demon.
Why, oh, why did Mullin not hug Beelzebub when she threw herself into his arms? He simply admired how cute she looked and then he was embarrassed and while I do understand that he is just very slow, I really hated that he didn’t even attempt to put an arm around her and enjoy the situation as her protector. She is so cute and tiny and yet he couldn’t go and embrace her. This was the worst, so disappointing. Please Japan, I know you are not so much into public displays of affection, but I really need them to be a realistic couple here! Let them fall in love naturally!
I was really upset about how slow Mullin and Beelzebub are, but then I reminded myself that in the culture they are copying, which happens to be the Japanese one, you can’t simply fall in love with your boss and get away with it. You can’t tell her you like her, flirt with her, see if she likes you back and be happy together. Even if it were just a co-worker, there would already be some minor issues and people would rather keep their relationship secret. Here, it’s just unthinkable that Mullin could go and like Beelzebub. And seeing how dense she is, we can only hope for a miracle that she realizes that she likes him and wants to be together with him. Mark my words here, the romance will end lukewarm at best. I haven’t read the manga yet, but I am pretty sure the maximum we will get is that they look at each other in the end, totally in love but not officially together, only acknowledging that they like each other. That’s my prediction. Let’s see how it will turn out in the next 6 episodes…
