The series is based on a manga by Ken Akamatsu. It is handled as the second season of Negima! Magister Negi Magi but is set 70 years later. The manga is still running and has 13 volumes as of September 2017. It is being published in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shonen Magazine. An OVA was released before the anime series started on 8 September 2017.
I don’t think is a coincidence that I saw UQ Holder after Black Clover. The premise is almost the same: an orphan boy who has no affinity for magic needs to go from underdog to protagonist after a dire situation threatens his life and the lives of the people he cares about. Unlike Black Clover, however, the episode is probably aimed to older kids. The opening sequence is too fan servicy with a bunch of girls having their clothes torn apart by Negi, and the rest of the episode has a sexual undertone constantly emitted by the buxom vampire. The second part, on the other hand, is too gruesome and bloody with body parts flying around in blood as the first antagonist slices his way through. All that sex and blood seems to be at odds with the overly shonen character of the protagonist.
The anime is accessible to newcomers. I haven’t seen anything else from the Negima franchise and it wasn’t too hard to follow the story. The episode provided enough context to know that the red-haired dude, Negima, was the protagonist of the last season and that he somehow plays a crucial role in this as well, and that the vampire was also part of that cast. From the origin story of the protagonist, I have to guess that he is related to someone from the first season as well. None of these impeded with my understanding of the plot, essentially that of a recently-turned vampire traveling to the capital to meet a phantasm that has been calling him atop a huge pillar to space.
My verdict is: If I am coming back to the show, it will be for the boobs. Call me shallow, but I don’t care about the cheesy story of another shonen protagonist, but I do care about 2D sexy women. Not all of the time, but damn, Yukihime is sexy. I can’t really say anything to Negima fans. You are probably watching it anyways.
