Eddie is a ginger who likes to dig up graves, Rachel is apparently religious, and Zack doesn’t give a shit about anything. This is what we got out of this episode and I am glad this floor is over because now from floor B3 and on the anime will finally feel more horror-like.
Eddie attacks Zack and tells him that he fell in love with Rachel from the first time he saw her and that he wants to be the one to kill her. He then flees and confronts Rachel telling her that he can make her wish come true and that he will make the perfect grave for her. He asks her to choose between him and Zack, and Rachel hesitates to answer as she realizes that if she doesn’t help Zack he won’t be able to get out by himself. Zack manages to track them down but reaches a dead end. As he can hear the conversation of Eddie and Rachel through a wall, he swears to God that he will kill Rachel, which triggers something in Rachel and convinces her that she wants Zack to be her killer. Eddie is furious with her decision and turns off the lights in the whole floor and attempts to attack them using darkness as his advantage. Zack tells Rachel to find a way to turn the lights back on and she manages to figure out that Eddie is controlling them via a remote control and steals it from him. As she turns the lights back on, Zack easily kills Eddie and they are able to proceed to the next floor.
Zack is a very interesting character: In this episode, we get to realize that even though he is a crazy psychopath, he can make rational decisions and that he has a moral conviction of some sort. He promises to God and he is a killer that refuses to kill and the weirdest thing of them all is that he doesn’t seem to value his life or life in general but finds people that don’t value their own lives repulsive. It will be interesting to learn more about his personality and his past.
Rachel needs to stop: Yes, Rachel darling, someone is going to kill you, so shut up. People seem to be quite annoyed by the constant reminder and repetition of her own wish. Guys, I am warning you, this is not going to change so get used to it. In the game, it’s a little bit better paced out because you have to do all the puzzle solving but since the anime adapts the more core points of the plot she will just keep saying it all the freaking time.
Eddie – Edward Mason: I highly doubt that he got his name from the well-known American economist and professor at Harvard University but Eddie is probably of Irish descent, judging from his appearance. Even though there are no hints of Eddie’s background throughout the main game, in the manga it is stated that he was born into a family that had been graveyard workers for generations. He was the third child of his family along with his three brothers and was often considered the best worker in the family business. You can read more about his backstory here.
It felt like they have changed some things regarding the way Eddie died but to be honest I am not sure. In the original game, we don’t get to see how he looks at all, this is something that perhaps got revealed in the manga and since the manga goes a bit more in-depth his character I was hoping to see it in the animated version as well but nope, probably didn’t find it very important to elaborate more on his character. Poor Eddie. I really like the voice actress they chose for him, Natsumi Fujiwara. Honestly, the cast of this show is just amazing.
One thing that really put me off in this episode was the scene of Zack breaking through the wall to reach Rachel. He just hit it once and then magically a whole perfectly shaped entrance appeared. They could have at least animated two or three more hits on the wall in order to make it a bit more believable. It ended up looking goofy and lame.
The floors we have seen so far were part of the introduction of the characters and where their relationship started to get some foundations. From the prison-looking floor B3 and onwards, things will start to get more complicated and messy so I am really looking forward toseeinge how the anime will decide to pace things out.
NEXT TIME: A Sinner has no right of choice.
