Angels of Death has finally come to an end, and it’s hard to not get emotional with that heartbreaking conclusion of the story.
Gray shoots Danny once again to prevent him from killing Zack. As Zack carries Ray through the exit, Gray talks with Danny, revealing that he became absorbed with how Ray and Zack managed to change each other, and that he has come to realize that everybody that was in the building is a human, both imperfect and beautiful. The building then collapses, probably killing both of them. Zack manages to reach the exit just as the police arrives to arrest him and take Rachel to a hospital. After recovering, she is being taken to a mental care facility where her doctor tries to rehabilitate her without giving her any information on Zack’s situation. Zack is found guilty for all the murders that he has done in the past as well as killing Rachel’s parents and kidnapping her, and he is sentenced to death. The same night when Rachel learns the news, Zack breaks into her room, having escaped prison, and is there in order to fulfill their promise. As they both leap out of the window to escape, Rachel once again pleads for Zack to kill her, which Zack reaffirms by telling her to stop crying and smile.
Gray’s realization and atonement: The last dialogue between Gray and Danny was quite insightful. Gray mentioned to Danny that thanks to him he was able to witness something of profound interest. The relationship between Rachel and Zak made him realize that they are all humans after all. He believed Zack to be a true angel with invisible wings, an angel so pure that the only thing he knew about was killing to survive, but Rachel made him use his blade for someone else’s sake, making Gray recognize his hidden human side. The same goes for every guardian of the building: they were all ugly, blind in their devotions but at the same time so beautiful, something that helps Gray to atone and gives closure to both him and Danny before they get killed by the collapsing building.
The ending is ambiguous: The anime decided to give a different twist to the ending compared to the actual game. In the anime it is unclear if Rachel is actually witnessing all this or just dreaming of Zack. So there are two different interpretations of it: The first is that Zack came to kill her in order to keep their promise and actually killed her and the other one is that Rachel, after hearing the news of Zack being sentenced to death, is making all this in her head and killed herself. The second ending is presented to us in a way that makes so much sense, especially since they don’t choose to give any explanation on the events that occur but it would be a bit against Rachel’s whole reasoning so far and as someone who has played the game, I choose to believe that Zack did appear in front of her and became her ‘Angel of Death’ after all.
Themes & Trivia
The actual game ending: So in the game things ended a bit differently. When Zack broke in the facility, he was spotted and Rachel shut herself inside the bedroom. The doctor was outside the door when Zack broke the window and she was the one that called the cops. The blood that appears on the window is there because Zack was hurt in the process, the knife was on the floor because Rachel picked it up from the desk at the beginning when she didn’t know what was going on but when she saw Zack she dropped it. Then, her doctor rushes in her room with the cops but they were already gone. It is also mentioned that no bodies were found inside the facility.
The music during Zack’s arrest and the ending scene was beautiful. It really made the scenes so melancholic and transmitted to the viewers a very emotional sentiment.
Despite its flaws, I think what really made Angels of Death a great show was its beautiful narratives and well thought dialogues. You really just see a story unraveling in front of you, and the more you look behind the meanings of everything, the more you will like and enjoy the story.
Zack was her ‘angel of death’.
I really enjoyed this series even though it was quite repetitive and slow at some points. The ending was really good, and I honestly liked the fact that everything that happened was real and not some sort of purgatory or a dream. It managed to end the story with a great overall horror atmosphere.
