Rachel ends up being the resident of the B1 floor and she looks like she is the craziest of them all. Will Zack and Danny be one of her next victims?
Zack is still watching the news about Rachel’s family incident along with a recording of an interview between Danny and Rachel, where she reveals that her parents were abusive and hated her and each other. One day she came back home wanting to ask her parents if she could bring a helpless little puppy in the house, but her father snapped completely and stabbed her mother to death. In order to defend herself she took her mother’s gun and shot her father. Afterwards, she stitched their bodies together in order to create the ‘perfect family’ and lived happily with them until the police arrived. Angry and frustrated, Zack goes back to the room where Rachel and Danny are and asks her if she is indeed the B1 floor resident and if she is going to kill him. Danny confirms his suspicions and reveals that she was sent to B7 after a mental breakdown she had by reading a Bible. Zack then declares to Rachel once more that he is not her God and she flees as he starts chasing her. She tries to kill him with various traps that are set around the floor ending up in the living room where he asks her if she intends to kill him, then Danny arrives and threatens him with a gun. Cornered by the two of them, Ray then calmly draws her gun and fires.
Danny has a mother complex or what? So basically Danny reveals to Rachel that his mother committed suicide due to him having been born missing an eye, and he becomes obsessed with Ray since her eyes resemble his mother’s. He wants her blank blue eyes because they remind him of how his mother was looking at him? What the hell is wrong with him?
Rachel the innocent deranged child: The poor girl has been through a lot and after seeing her backstory no one can really blame her for becoming crazy. She was witnessing her abusive father beating her mother on a daily basis and her mother was taking it out on her. She just wanted company and a happy ‘perfect’ family, that’s why she wanted that puppy and that’s why she tried to ‘fix’ it along with her parents. She seemed to believe that by stitching them up she will make them and herself happy which is sad and creepy at the same time. She knew that she was a sinner and just wanted to believe in God and in Zack so she can forgive herself and die in peace.
They kind of ruined the best scene: The ‘but I need a God’ scene had such a better climatic effect in the game. The music was much more powerful when Rachel gets desperate and runs away plus their positioning was much better than the one they decided to go for in the anime. But I think the impact was ruined because they didn’t really do much with Rachel’s expression. In the game her looks represent such vivid bloodlust that really scene in the anime is really lacking. They have failed to show the ‘switch’ that happens in Rachel’s personality.
The reveal of Rachel’s backstory adds a lot of clarity to what was happening at the beginning of the series. Basically, all the messages on the walls were saying to her that she is a floor master and she is not supposed to go through this path for victims. I wonder if Gray was behind all these. Also, I don’t think that this scene was shown in the anime, but on Zack’s floor Rachel tries to ‘fix’ the dead bird, stitches it up and buries it somewhere, which is a detail that showcases early on that her mental state is probably not that good.
On another note, this episode had some beautiful scenes: when Rachel holds the puppy box and points the gun at her father, the artwork and shadows are so well made. Also, the scene where she shoots the window with the fake moon was really pretty.
Do you think that she actually shot Zack or Danny? For me it’s kind of frustrating that they don’t just sit down and talk about it with Zack and instead we have to go through all this unnecessary drama but whatever. There are three more episodes to go, let’s see what they have to offer.
NEXT TIME: Swear you will be killed by me.
