After the Rain (Koi wa Ameagari no You ni) does like to jump around, pretty much like real life does. This week, we spend more time again with Haruka and the track team and connect a bit with last week at the end of the episode! Let’s take a look what new developments we find in Akira in Episode 6!
Japanese Title: 沙雨 (Sau)
Episode 6 – Fine Rain
Akira is taking extra classes in Japanese literature, as it seems, while her friends from the track-and-field club are practicing. She seems to find herself a lot in thought, and when she misses her bus to work, she hears some children talk about a lucky charm you can get through a gacha-machine. It is the secret character and is supposed to help you get closer to the one you like… Akira wants to get it so badly that she spends a load of money on the machine but ends up with nothing. Haruka meets her and asks her what she’s doing with all those keychains. Akira gives her one of the sets she got, since every character came out five times… just not the character she wanted. Haruka is really touched and notices how bad she wanted the secret character and ends up getting it for her. When Akira starts to wear it, it seems to work! She meets Tencho at the Yokohama library…
Toys with meaning
I thought it was a bit ironic, how Haruka connected the little keychain with Akira and thus took special care of it while Akira was only thinking about how it would help her get closer to Tencho. I don’t think Akira even considered it connected to Haruka, even though she got it from her. To be honest, I felt a bit bad for her friend. She tries so hard to approach Akira and stay friends with her, but she doesn’t know how to handle her with all the loss she faces. I guess Haruka must also feel bad and maybe blame herself? After all, she seems like the leader of the team, and as we saw, Akira got hurt because she overdid it during practice. Maybe Haruka blames herself for it and because she knows how much Akira loves to run, she doesn’t know how to treat her. On top of it, Akira might be the reason why Haruka started running at all if we consider the cute scene from their childhood when Akira outruns Haruka. It was such a cute scene. They do share a special relationship, and to be honest at this point, I might be a bit more curious about how they will develop than how it will go with Tencho. He just isn’t the type to take advantage of a little girl that started to like him because someone took away her favorite toy…
Why Akira needs to work
It was in this episode that I started to wonder why Akira is actually working part-time. When I was a high school student, I had to work for some reasons. But I was one of the very few students who actually worked. So I started to wonder why Akira works. The episode answered my question right away when Akira spent what I assume to be $50-100 just to get the toy. I loved how she went home without the secret character but instead had a bag full of the other charms.
Tencho and his passion for books
It is a delight hearing Tencho talk about books. I adored the scene where he refuses to recommend her a book. His reason is so good and made me understand why I am often not reading what other people recommend me. I will quote him very roughly, but he said something like ‘It becomes a pain reading on if you realize that you do not share the opinion with your friend.’
Because, yes, that’s right! A book can leave so many different impressions on people, and that’s why I love reading so much. Everybody can relate to different characters and aspects of the story. The deeper it goes, the better. For every situation of life, there is a book out there and depending on what kind of situation you are, you will relate to it differently. That’s what Tencho tries to tell her and it was such an eye-opening experience. It makes me appreciate this anime even more. I think he will turn out to be a good friend of Akira and someone she can look up to. Also, I expect he will grow in their one-sided-love relationship as well. His doubts in this episode were less than before, so maybe he is getting used to having her around him!
WHAT!? TENCHOOO!! WHO IS CHIHIRO!! What is going on, why is it so exciting? Is she his love? His ex-wife? Did she write a book? If he has such a great passion, why is he not a book author? What is going on? I just hope they will not jump to another kind of issue and let us wait for an explanation. Please tell us know who Chihiro is!!
I held this topic back since Εpisode 1 because I thought it might come in handy at a later point. Well, in this episode, it is impossible to avoid the topic!
In Japan, your club is a bit like your family. Especially with sports clubs, it might become the center of your life, because even if you do not want to be a professional, you will have to work hard with all the others who in fact do want to become professionals. It is more with team sports than with individual sports, but still. There are even some schools better known for their sports team than any other thing, and getting in the specific school might boost your chances of becoming a pro. In this case, Akira was one of the best of her club and losing her as a member must have been hard on both, her and her friends. Since you dedicate so much to training and practice, it’s natural for the members of the club to become your best friends. When Akira lost her place in the team due to injury, she probably also lost most of her friends, since they are so busy with practice and tournaments, they don’t have much time for friends outside the team. Akira knows how hard they have to work and she is also hurting for losing her hobby, so she completely distances herself from her friends and her former hobby. Which might be understandable, since it helps ignore the pain but at the same time it is rather stupid since she feels double the loss and has more emotional pain to deal with. One can also start to build up the theory that she tries to escape her sadness by falling in love… with a 45-year-old guy.
I WANT an explanation for Chihiro. Actually, I need it. What is going on and what did she write? Please let us delve more into Tencho’s life!!
I also want more to happen with either Haruka or Yoshizawa. Where is Yoshizawa? What is he doing with his crush on her? How will Haruka deal with Akira, if she finds out she crushes on an older guy? Maybe the next episode will go back to more scenes in the restaurant. Not that I really want them to do it, but I think it might be a good time to do so to get back the normality and give Akira and Tencho more time together.
