Thank you so much to the writers of ACCA: 13-ku Kansatsu-ka for making me even more emotionally invested in this show! The characters are getting more fleshed out, and the story is slowly unfolding, albeit we don’t know towards what yet. What I do know is that this series is gradually making its way toward my top favorites, and this episode totally had a hand in it!
Japanese Original Episode Title: 視線の先、重なる足跡
There weren’t a lot of revelations today, but those that were revealed were certainly heavy ones. However, they matched it up with funny parts on the side! From Lotta’s stalkers forming a friendship because of bread, to Jean and Nino possibly getting a rift in theirs because of work, it was just a wild ride full of different emotions! We got more info on Jean and Lotta’s parents, as well, who we have never seen up to now. It was also established that Nino really was following Jean around, as he was the one who saved our protagonist in Suitsu (which I guessed last week, by the way! I knew that blue hair was a dead giveaway!). And under all of that, it seems that most people in Dōwā have their own agendas, for the good of their districts, and for themselves.
Lotta’s stalkers, again: Amazing. Lotta’s accumulating stalkers, without her even knowing how smitten they are with her! And gosh, did Rail and Magie make me laugh so hard! To think Magie took over the investigation on Lotta because the previous person got distracted by the mochi dessert, but there he was, distracted by simple toast! Rail even got along with him, also because of food, when they were supposed to be rivals! Well, at least he still managed to do his job eventually: gaining a ‘bread buddy’ who knew a bit more about Lotta, and even eventually got to talk to her on his own! Guess he and Prince Schwan have to thank food for all of this!
Jean and Nino: I was totally heartbroken for these two, first when Jean started suspecting that Nino was spying on him, and then when Nino got ‘found out’ by his friend! Seeing them express emotions way different from their usual ones hurt me so bad – a grim looking Jean, and a surprised Nino, who later had dead eyes while he was talking on the phone! I’m just super glad that this didn’t form a gap between them. Jean even asked Nino to keep Lotta company over the holidays! That’s friendship for you! I do wonder if Nino will still report to the one on the phone, though. Who was that anyway? Did it sound like Grossular to you guys?
Each district trying to get ahead: At first I thought Perry, the Branch Chief of Birra, was just ranting about semi-important details, stuff that we can just forget. But I suppose it’s really true that no good writer would just put in stuff that aren’t useful to the plot. Eventually, Perry presented a possible fact: the more prosperous a district is, the more chances you have of holding absolute power in the kingdom. Those that can offer more to the world become richer and will get the other districts to depend on them. I wonder if it’s related to what each district asked from Jean whenever he got a cigarette from them?
Jean and Lotta’s parents – All this time I thought their parents were just away, but now we found out they really are, permanently. It must’ve had something to do with a train accident, probably in Rokkusu, given Lotta’s face when she heard Jean’s riding in one. I guess it’s also why Jean asked Nino to stay with Lotta, aside from having someone with her over the holidays. Will we get more info about them eventually?
Themes & Trivia
Friendship vs. Work: As we’ve seen from Jean and Nino, the former didn’t let the latter’s work be a hindrance to their friendship, even though what he did was basically a cause for distrust. It’s also probably thanks to Jean being nonchalant about the whole spying and suspicion ordeal. Nino wouldn’t even divulge much about what he does, but Jean still treated him the same as always. We could also somehow see this with Rail and Magie. The former still befriended the latter even though he’s technically a rival for Lotta’s attention. I do also believe that Magie really thinks of Rail as a friend and fellow bread lover, not just a way to get more info on Lotta.
Food Appreciation – This show totally made me hungry. It also made me quite envious of Lotta; we often just saw her buying or eating sweets! She didn’t seem to be getting fat at all, too! Meanwhile, her brother was a bread enthusiast, as Jean said he liked all kinds of bread. Even the three female staff under Jean are often seen eating or craving food! Probably being in a world where different cultures mean different kinds of food is one huge factor for why they love it so much. It totally reflects why there are many gourmets in our own world, since we also have diverse selections.
Prosperity in Geography: This is another thing our real world has in common with ACCA:13’s world. One of the things that makes a country more prosperous than others is where they’re located. The ones in areas with good climate and terrain, like Fāmasu, are more likely to offer more valuable goods and services, and are thereby more fortunate. But those who are situated in less favorable areas will most likely be left behind.
Ulterior Motives: Seriously, Lotta’s the only pure bean in this show. Everyone else has got secrets, even Jean! We don’t know what the letters are asking of him, after all. We don’t know what Lilium is plotting by helping Jean and pinning the coup plot on Grossular. We don’t know what Grossular hopes to achieve by keeping an eye on Jean. We don’t know who else Nino is reporting to, and whatever for. And there are still many other characters with their own agendas.
This episode is certainly a huge leap compared to the previous ones in terms of storytelling. The emotions did start last week with Warbler and Suitsu’s situation, but it became more consistent here. I truly got to relate with more than one character, and managed to see them in a different light. Art-wise, the quality is so far so good! The designs of the new districts are especially nice! You can really see the differences in culture and terrain, which is a must because of the theme of this episode.
Confronting Your Boss
Just like with the episode before, this one ended with Grossular once again. But Jean came up to him on his own! What could they possibly talk about? Something about Crow? Or maybe about Grossular’s suspicions? What do you guys think? Do share your thoughts about it and the episode as a whole below!
